A few things to keep in mind, about Yuri!!! on ICE and about any canon.

Word of God is not canon. What's on the screen or on the page is canon. Word of God is supplementary material that you are welcome to incorporate but you are not obliged to. We do not live in a universe where Greedo shot first!

Actions speak louder than words. People don't always say what they mean. They don't always know what they mean. When they try to explain their motivations after the fact, they may get them wrong or they may not be able to admit their true motivations. That applies whether you're taking a Doylist or Watsonion point of view.

Just because Kubo or Yuuri says, "hey, looking at these matching gold rings that canonically engaged couple JJ & Isabella are wearing makes me want to go buy a matching set of expensive gold wedding bands to wear on our wedding band fingers and exhange them with Victor on the steps of a church -- it will be just like that time my high school handicrafts club sewed matching bookmarks for everyone!" doesn't mean that was actually Yuuri's motivation, even if Yuuri tells himself it is. Or Kubo tells us it is.

People can't always articulate their feelings. One anime scene that strongly impressed me in years gone by was in Nana. Early on, Hachi and her boyfriend are away on a trip together. She asks him to tell her that he loves her. At first he says, "Don't ask a Japanese man to say that!" But he can tell she really wants to hear it, so he starts psyching himself up to it: I'm an American. My name is Michael. But he still can't say it and in the end, Hachi says it's okay, she heard him say it in her heart.

Obviously, not everyone will have that much trouble speaking about their feelings, but it's something to keep in mind.

Your interpretation is valid. I can interpret Yuuri and Victor's relationship in a lot of different ways and I really love that. You do you.

Personally, you will never convince me that Otabek is a DJ.

1. Your main fandom of the year?

Let's just say "sports manga/anime". Prince of Tennis, Haikyuu!! and Yuri!!! on ICE dominated.

2. Your favourite film watched this year?

Ghostbusters 2016. Oh. My. God. So smart and funny and fun. Also I got Holtzmanned pretty hard! (Like you didn't.)

3. Your favourite book read this year?

The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. Far and away my favourite. I love first-contact novels and this was such a fresh take! I wasn't as enamoured of The Dark Forest but I'm looking forward to reading Death's End in 2017.

4. Your favourite TV show of the year?

Yuri!!! on ICE hands-down. Just. Was not expecting this level of awesomeness. Every time I re-watch I see new things and flail harder. (Honourable mention to Brooklyn 99 continuing to be amazing!)

5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year?

Twitter. I still miss the slower pace and threaded comments of LJ, but Twitter is where I do my fannish chatting these days. Come find me (@prillalar) there so I can chat with you too! I'm @prillalar on Tumblr too. (Um, the queue of Georgi birthday fanart reblogs will end eventually.) I poked at Imzy a bit but it didn't stick, at least not yet. (If you're reading this on Tumblr, I'm prillalar on Dreamwidth. Yay branding!)

I do want to engage a bit more on DW in 2017 so I'll try to post more often and hopefully find others who are still posting. I'm thinking fannish stuff on DW and Tumblr, life stuff probably just on DW.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

It's a toss-up between the Sports Anime Shipping Olympics (aka SASO) and Yuri!!! on ICE but I'm going to go with SASO because that's where I met a bunch of the people I've been flailing about YOI with. ♥

That said, the twelve weeks when YOI was airing was the most intense fannish experience of my LIFE and I've been around for a while! I'm hoping to ride that wave all the way to season 2.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

Cheer Danshi. (So disappointed, I can't be bothered to look up the correct number and placement of exclamation marks in the title.) Men's college cheerleading, should be awesome, right? I foolishly got my hopes up. It was cute but ultimately uninteresting to me and I haven't finished it. (Though I do plan to.) No fandom sprung up around it that I could find either.

8. Your TV boyfriend of the year?

Georgi Popovich. I love sad sack side characters. I love self-aggrandizing side characters. I love evil witches. I love Georgi. [witch makeup heart hands emoji]

9. Your TV girlfriend of the year?

Can we go with movie girlfriend and say HOLTZMANN OMG 4EVA? Otherwise, Saeko-neesan from Haikyuu!! (I lost my heart when she was drifting!).

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?

YOI episode 10. Especially the end. But especially the glove. But especially all of it. But especially the end. This episode caused me to end up sitting on the floor of my office the next day, because I couldn't stand up due to emotion, listening to Shut Up and Dance and crying.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?

I would have thought this would be Prince of Tennis but I didn't have to miss it because it's still there! Not to the same extent as the days of yore but I have a bunch of friends who only just got into it and a bunch of friends who are still into it and a bunch who used to be and still tolerate my fannishness. I only wish there was a way to make it more centralized, like it used to be on LJ.

12. The fandom you haven’t tried yet, but want to?

I'm not sure if this exactly qualifies, but I'm hoping Yowamushi Pedal S3 will bring me more into the fandom proper.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?

Making new friends and reconnecting with old friends. I know I'm a bit standoffish and can be hard to get to know. And also, since I'm a fair bit older than a lot of people I meet in fandom these days, I don't always want to take the initiative in case I seem creepy. But I've got to know some really great people recently and I know I'll get to know more. :)

Writing more fic. YOI, tenipuri, HQ. Slam Dunk. Star Wars. Finish the Christophe/Georgi series. Start that Polar Bear Café Shirokuma/Grizzly story I keep thinking about. Write more and more and more Inui/Kaidoh.

2016 was the year I came back to fandom after several years hiatus. It's one of the best things I've ever done. I love you all so much.
