Anime rec: Monster

Quick PSA before the rec: AR's PoT 150 sub is up.

debchan said "watch Monster". And debchan is always right about these things, because she is smart. In fact, she's so smart that I'm just going to quote her description of the show instead of writing my own:

Monster is the story of Dr. Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon practicing in Germany just before the fall of the Berlin wall. He has a bright future ahead of him until one day he decides to go against the hospital director's wishes and operates on a young boy instead of the Mayor. And then...

This is a dark story, with a more realistic animation style than most of the things I watch. There are murders and supernatural overtones and things spinning out of control. (If it weren't anime, I would expect it to be filmed in Vancouver. *g*) I'm pimping it to my friend D., with whom I watch X-Files and Millennium and things of that ilk.

And I love love love Dr Tenma, with his sweet long face and his soft voice and his sad, sad eyes. I want to hug him every moment he's on screen.

According to debchan (and she's not likely to be wrong) there will be a 70 episode run. 24 eps have aired, of which 23 are subbed. Good subs, too. It's based on a manga of the same name, which I'm not going to read until after the anime is done, because I'd rather see the story unfold that way. I've watched the first 9 eps, but I was hooked after the very first one. I'll probably binge on the rest of the subbed eps at the weekend.

Monster is fascinating and it brings the pain. I'm looking to it to help fill the void when FMA is over in a few weeks.

I thought it was only FMA that could make me gasp and stop the video and stare at the screen in shock with my mouth hanging open.
