Anime rec: Monster

Quick PSA before the rec: AR's PoT 150 sub is up.

[livejournal.com profile] debchan said "watch Monster". And [livejournal.com profile] debchan is always right about these things, because she is smart. In fact, she's so smart that I'm just going to quote her description of the show instead of writing my own:

Monster is the story of Dr. Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon practicing in Germany just before the fall of the Berlin wall. He has a bright future ahead of him until one day he decides to go against the hospital director's wishes and operates on a young boy instead of the Mayor. And then...

This is a dark story, with a more realistic animation style than most of the things I watch. There are murders and supernatural overtones and things spinning out of control. (If it weren't anime, I would expect it to be filmed in Vancouver. *g*) I'm pimping it to my friend D., with whom I watch X-Files and Millennium and things of that ilk.

And I love love love Dr Tenma, with his sweet long face and his soft voice and his sad, sad eyes. I want to hug him every moment he's on screen.

According to [livejournal.com profile] debchan (and she's not likely to be wrong) there will be a 70 episode run. 24 eps have aired, of which 23 are subbed. Good subs, too. It's based on a manga of the same name, which I'm not going to read until after the anime is done, because I'd rather see the story unfold that way. I've watched the first 9 eps, but I was hooked after the very first one. I'll probably binge on the rest of the subbed eps at the weekend.

Monster is fascinating and it brings the pain. I'm looking to it to help fill the void when FMA is over in a few weeks.

Yes, me too. His defining moment, for me, wasn't when he decided to operate on Johan, but rather his expression of horror and heartbreak when Eva made (trying to be vague so as not to spoil) that smug, callous statement at dinner. It really said it all; that she was wrong, of course, but also that part of his horror was self directed. He'd allowed himself to start sliding into the same mindset and could have so easily kept his eyes closed to his descent until it would have been too late.

I'm so glad you're enjoying it. It's rather baffling to me that there isn't more of a buzz about this anime. I actually downloaded the first 8 episodes on a whim and knowing nothing about it, as I too am looking for something to fill the void FMA's ending will leave. Like you said, Monster should do very nicely.

Speaking of FMA, ack! Only two episodes to go. And it looks like we're going to have a gap of a week between 50 and 51. Unless Anime News Network is wrong when they said: Japanese game site EG News reports that voice recording and post production recording for the 51st and final TV episode of Fullmetal Alchemist has been compled. The episode airs on Japanese TV on October 2nd.

I was pretty underwhelmed by this week's ep, I'm sad to say.

I think I expected more to happen than what did (and for sure didn't expect Ed to wind up *where* he did). How are they going to resolve *that* in two episodes?

Sorry, but spoilers! Cover your eyes, Hal!

(She's only seen up to episode 9.)

Sorry, didn't mean to spoil. But I thought I left it vague enough to not really bother. Sorry!

And now I'm trying to remember back to what had happened by episode nine...

One of the things I like about the show is that all the characters are realistically attractive and unattractive. And, man, do they all look German :-) I also love the music. And the storybook images over the end credits are intriguing.
