The Core

I went to see The Core at the weekend and meant to write a little review, but never got around to it. So here it is. This is a little spoilery, I guess, but no more so than the trailers. And it wasn't exactly Magnolia.

So, the earth's core stops spinning (does it actually spin?) and a bunch of scientists and astronauts have to ride a rock-burrowing ship down into all that liquid hot magma and set off a bunch of nuclear bombs. The movie's tagline is "Earth has a deadline" but I'm thinking it should be "Earth gets fucked."

This was a fun summer movie with many over-the-top action sequences, gruesome deaths, and unbelievable solutions to hokey problems. Which was just what I went to see. But I thought it took itself a little too seriously for what it was. And the character scenes always felt cut-off to me, like syndicated Simpsons episodes or something. Even so, the movie was about half an hour too long.

Plus there was this scene where someone is trying to divert power from an installation in Alaska so he re-routes it to New York. And it just seemed like, hey, Canada doesn't even exist. Well, maybe we don't.

On the upside, I thought Josh and Serge were kind of slashy.
