After yesterday's Catullus thread, I was thinking, yet again, oh, why didn't I ever pick up The Latin Sexual Vocabulary? And then I thought, I shall! I zipped over to Amazon to get the details. You know how they offer you discounts when you buy two books together?

Better Together, Amazon said. Buy this book with Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis.

Jeez! Do they want us to write our smutty fanfic in Latin now?

The thought of Latin comp scares me, actually. See, I was never taught to read and write Latin and Greek, only to translate it. (Well, we did a tiny bit of comp, but it was more on the sentence level.) Though Harrius Potter is certainly helping with my reading ability.

Don't look for any Latin fanfic from me! But Harrius Potter is very straightforward Latin if you're looking for something fun to try. I carry my Cassells around with me when I read it, for vocab, but the sentence structure is very simple.

I'm not even at that level yet; this is all being self-taught out of desire to be able to create believable spells for my fiction. This is how I acquire 90% of my knowledge - fandom obsessions.

So, any recs for good Latin textbooks that I can use while not in a classroom setting? [g]

Damn, I meant to get back to you on this and I forgot. But I don't have any recs for you, I'm afraid. I did all my Latin in the classroom and because of a gap of several years in my uni education, I ended up using two different sets of texts and getting confused since some stuff I never formally covered.

The text I remember was called "Reading Latin" but I'm not sure how to judge if it would be any good to work through on your own.

B&N boringly doesn't try to push any kids books at all on me when I look up The Latin Sexual Vocabulary. How are they going to make a go of it if they don't see a copy of Harry Potter with every other book sold?

The reason I didn't buy it is that I already own it. :) I've been enjoying it but I'm irked that there are no translator's notes.
