Mac OS X & IRC

Anybody on Mac OS X ever got a working IRC fserve set up? If so, which client were you using? And which OS X version? (I'm on 10.3.4.)

I am so hoping I won't have to resort to VirtualPC.

Yes - but on OSX 10.2.8 (I need to upgrade)

I can't remember which client it is - but I found it at the apple site. vI can check when I get home - or I bet either ixchelmala or heinous_bitca would know.

If you can let me know, that would be cool. I have about 3 IRC clients right now, not including Fire, but an fserve seems to be a tricky thing to get going and none of them seem to easily do the job.

Thanks -- I'd read that page before and it's a good guide for DCC. But it doesn't actually cover fserve, which is what I'm trying to figure out. It seems like it's not easy to set on up on Mac OS X, from what I've read so far.

It looks like I have Ircle - and with a DCC window you can use /fserve nick

I cannot for the life of me remember if that worked - but I think it did.

Ah! It's ircle that I've been struggling unsuccessfully with, but perhaps I'll buckle down and struggle harder. Part of the problem is probably router/firewall config.

There have been some changes between 10.2 and 10.3 that might also have an effect. For instance, 10.2 had a built-in ident server that ircle used, but for some reason, it's not in 10.3.

Sorry, I can't help you. But I do have a question. Have you used VirtualPC? What's it like? (We're *this* close to converting my parents, but my Dad has an application for his GPS that won't run on a Mac.)

I have VirtualPC 5 -- and it's kind of slow, though now that I've got RAM to burn, it's a lot better. It's one or two versions behind the latest, VPC 2004, which is now owned by your friend and mine, Microsoft. I don't know how zippy that version is.

I only use VPC for checking websites in IE -- and it works fine for that. It came with WinXP, but that really crawled so I installed Win98 instead and that was better.

If I recall correctly, I got Colloquy working. It's pretty straightforward, and designed for X, any version. (http://www.colloquy.info/) But I'm a horrible coward about actually irc-ing, and haven't touched it recently.

Thanks! I have Colloquy but couldn't figure out how to actually set up an fserve with it -- maybe it needs a special script or something. I'll read up on it some more and see. :)

I rather hate IRC, but it is now a point of honour with me to become conversant with its ins and outs. I'm fine with just using it to chat, but beyond that, I'm not too experienced.

How did you get an fserve running with ChatZilla? Did it need some sort of special script? I checked it out and didn't find any info on that in the Moz help or forums or even on Google.

I've been using snak quite successfully for IRC on 10.3.4

I haven't tried that one yet -- I'll check it out. Was setting up the fserve pretty straightforward? I've been trying to use ircle which seems about the most fully-featured of all the clients I've tried, but it requires a script to get the fserve running and I've not yet been able to track the script down. (It's in the app folder, say the docs, but they lie, they lie.)

I think I may have found it -- go to http://members.fortunecity.com/irclescripts/scripts.html and there are three scripts that claim to include FServe functionality: Fserver, Halo 1.1b3, and MacPack 3.7.1. Hopefully one of them will have what you need.

I looked at Fserver and it downloaded in a format that only AppleScript Editor could open, so if you want to customize it, a regular text editor won't do the trick.

Hmm, just looked some more and there's a thread on FServe stuff at http://www.ircle.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10&sid=9061a8afb4a6d67209d4a473b18ed776 -- but it's not clear to me whether or not FServe is working in the current version of IRCle. (The guy posting there as Onno is the author of IRCle.)
