One Pill, Two Pill, Red Pill, Blue Pill
I finally watched the second Animatrix installment. I was not really blown away. After the first one was so expository, I was looking forward to this one being more story-oriented. But the "story" was so thin and the dialogue so schlocky that I was disappointed.
Then I watched the Japanese dub and enjoyed it much more. Once I didn't have to listen to the dialogue, I could focus on the animation, which I thought was stylish. (Not that I'm an expert.) And I liked the voices better.
I still have the Japanese Phantom Menace trailer around somewhere. My Star Wars friends and I were really impressed by that, as I recall. When we heard Yoda, we decided all his dialogue should be in Japanese henceforth. He sounded so much more masterful and scary. (No offence, Frank!)
But it did make it seem like Anakin should have been one of those little short-pantsed monster movie kids. And maybe he should have been. "JarJar is friend to all children!"
We tried for a while to get hold of Star Wars Japanese dubs but never quite managed. Apparantly the original trilogy ones are really great.
I've wanted to study Japanese but then I wouldn't be able to enjoy stuff like this. Hmm.
fandom nonsense
We all have those scary moments where suddenly it feels like the past has come full circle and we need to go back in inspect the beginnings of various pieces of out lives. Anyway, I was on the bus today returning from NYC and discussing fandom with a friend, somehow we came to the X-Files and Star Wars which were my two first. It was fun, it was nostalgic. We sang "David Duchovny" by Bree Sharp.
When I came home I realized that the first piece of fanfiction I ever read was written by you. That was five years ago. I was just so young then-- I hadn't even watched that many episodes, I don't even remember how I found your site, and I certainly wasn't old enough to read the NC-17 stuff. But there I was, reading it anyway.
Right. I sort of feel like I need to pay my fandom dues or something--even though I never wrote X-Files fic, and only write HP and some LOTR RPS now, I still started with you. So, I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you so much.
Re: fandom nonsense
I think the first fanfic I ever read was some godawful Star Trek slash. I followed some Geek Link of the Day and there it was. I can't recall any specifics. But then, when I got into the X-Files, I thought -- I bet this fandom has good fanfic. And so it did. And I was pulled in and I've never gotten free.
We've all come a long way in five years, I think. I'm all multi-fandimensional now (even making my way into HP) and I'm certainly writing better. But that first blush of fandom is something you never really recapture and I miss it.
Thanks for including me in your nostalgia. :)
