RotK again
To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,

I've been listening to the RotK score a lot this week and I think that Into The West will forever be a Legolas/Gimli love song to me. It's them I always picture sailing away when I hear it.
I've now seen RotK a second time. I don't think I'll comment on any shortcomings until I've had a chance to re-read the books and see the movie one more time. But here are some things I liked.
* When Smeagol and Deagol fight, you can hear the Ring's voice saying the same words it did at the Council of Elrond
* When Elrond says that Arwen is dying, I half expected him to follow up with, "She can't have more than 60 years left!"
* Also in that convo, after giving Anduril to Aragorn, Elrond says, in Elvish, "I give hope to men". I thought that was particularly lovely because, as you will recall, Estel -- "hope" -- was Aragorn's name when he was being brought up in the house of Elrond. (Their lines are actually derived from Aragorn's mother's words to him: "I gave hope to the Dunedain, I have kept no hope for myself.")
* I think a whole nother post is called for on the sorrows of Elrond. Suffice it to say, I really felt for him here.
* Was that PJ in amongst the corsairs? Arr!
* In Minas Tirith, when the orcs have entered and Gandalf is yelling at Pippin to go back, Pippin says, I think, "He taught us to fight," just before he skewers that orc. I didn't hear that the first time and this time I just melted. I miss Boromir a lot.
* When Aragorn is before the Black Gate, the Eye speaks to him: "Aragorn, Aragorn, Elessar". That's just what the Ring whispered to him in FotR, near the end, when Frodo was holding it out to him. Also, I had a sudden sick desire to read some AU fic where Sauron triumphs and enslaves Aragorn. I know there's got to be some.
* Two things made me cry this time around: Pippin's song with Faramir's hopeless charge, and the Rohirrim shouting "Death! Death!" When Merry screamed "Death!" it hit me in the pit of my stomach.
* I feel very, very lucky in this movie. Merry and Pippin have always been my favourite characters. Merry is first in the books, but Pippin is first in the movies and this was Pippin's movie in so many ways. As well, the great love between them! Their parting, their reunion, their close comradeship -- I couldn't ask for more.

By the way, I even didn't understand what he was talking about!!! Isn't it a little too exagerate??!!!
AH!!!!!!! Pippin's song is marvellous!!!!!!!! He's so great in that movie!!!! Merry too!!! They're so courageous!!!!
Well, if I have to admit, I've nearly cried all the movie long...

Okay, I've seen several people reference this, and I have to ask -- was this actually subtitled in the film, or do y'all just have a familiarity with Elvish that I don't? (Which is entirely possible). I recall being irritated last night that I couldn't understand what they were saying, since none of the Elvish was subtitled, but now that I'm reading reviews, I'm having to wonder if we just got a mistakenly unsubbed print.
Or I'm just not the Tolkien fan I thought I was. *sigh*

The first time I saw this, it was definitely not subtitled. Though for some reason I only noticed the lack of subtitles in that particular scene with with Elrond in Aragorn. When I saw RotK in a different theater a few days later, it was subtitled.

Well, you could make an argument for Hurin - Huor? No, Hurin - in The Silmarillion, I suppose. So hey, Tolkien himself wrote the AU!
