Mrs Widgery's Lodger

When I suggested to [livejournal.com profile] kestrelsan that Jack and Daniel should do some morris dancing, she accused me of making morris up. But really, not even I could invent something like that.

I've only seen morris once. There's a local morris group (or maybe lots of them) and when Terry Pratchett came to town, the morris dancers performed outside the venue. [Insert joke about "not the stick and bucket dance!" here.]

It seems like such a cool thing -- so odd and ridiculous and ancient. I bet it would be fun to do, with the sticks and bells and handkerchiefs and all.

Whenever I think of morris, I think of the Lancre Morris Men in Lords and Ladies, dancing, dancing for their lives. Every time I read that, it almost makes me cry.

So, in conclusion, I did not make up morris but I was perhaps wrong to suggest that Jack and Daniel participate. Maybe Teal'c, though.

It kind of surprises me that someone hadn't heard of Morris dancing. Hey, there were Morris dancers performing on the lawn outside my workplace this summer.

I think Jack & Daniel would look cute doing it, too. :)

I first heard of it by reading a Ngaio Marsh novel, actually. But I now live in Victoria, B.C., which is a Canadian city that tries desperately to be a city of All Things British, so we actually have people who do that kind of thing here.

Don't ask me where this came from - I am a truly demented person. But all of a sudden, I have this vision of Jack and Daniel trying to do a proper Morris dance and failing miserably - but ol' buddy Thor doing it step for leap proper, bells, hankies, and all. Gods, the image in my brain proves it needs a good scrubbing - just as soon as I quit laughing my ass off.
