Someone at Connexions also made a really good point about the cheerful front being a cheerful front and how he's really just a calculating type person who desperately wants to fit in and is trying everything in order to do so. (Or something like that.) Anyhow, I really liked that interpretation.
Yes! That great moment in Homecoming (well, given that it's one of those stupid "we're in imminent danger, let's have a heartfelt talk!" scenes):
DANIEL: You're very... up. JONAS: (kind of... wistfully, or ironically, or something) Yeah.
I mean, I don't think he's evil-calculating. But he was awfully adrift - more so than Teal'c, in a way. Bigger changes for Teal'c, but he had Jack firmly in his corner from the very beginning and doesn't tend to the insecure anyway.
I wish they'd played that up more. Not that Stargate is big into the psychology of its characters, but I can see the Platonic ideal of Jonas out of the corner of my eye, and I think it would've been really interesting.
