Sports Anime Shipping Olympics Sign-ups are open!
Spreading the news! I did SASO last summer and it was super fun and I met some great people! There are a ton of series to prompt and write for but you can still play if you're a fan of only one sports series *cough*YOI*cough*.
If you don't want to join a team, you can sign up for Grandstand and do all the prompts and fills in the bonus rounds. That's the best part, IMO.

SIGN UPS FOR SPORT, SHIP, AND GRANDSTAND TEAMS ARE OPEN!
The Sports Anime Shipping Olympics (SASO) is a summer-long prompt-based shipping challenge for sports anime and manga fandoms!
Fans form teams around their favorite ships and canons, and then compete in prompt-based challenges to show off just how awesome their ship/fandom is. Everything from fanfiction and fanart to games, recipes, graphic design, cosplay, videos, animation, coding/programming, and voice acting (and more!) are welcome. Sound like fun? >>> COME AND SIGN UP! <<<

I did a team last year as well; there ended up 5 of us, I think. (You need 4 members to qualify but you don't have to recruit them all yourself.) The main difference between a ship or fandom team and Grandstand is that the teams can make famworks for two main rounds, though not all do. We did but didn't really stress about the points, just making something we could all have fun with.
But the bonus rounds -- prompting and filling, kind of like a kinkmeme -- are the best part. And you could always sign up for Grandstand to just do bonus rounds if you're not sure. There's no obligation at all.
This is the first bonus round from last year, should give you some idea of the prompt frenzy. http://sportsanime.dreamwidth.org/13489.html

Most of my SASO socializing seems to be on Twitter rather than DW or Tumblr.

And that's one year less in purgatory for me for writing underage porn.Ooooh boy, I would not know those feels. *eyedart*
Yeah, besides YOI and Free!, I'm into Kuroko no Basuke right now. I'm on the third series right now and I love those dumb basketeens a lot. (Especially Kagami and Aomine.)
I also tried Haikyuu!! and thought it was super cute, but I couldn't handle how slow the games were (I say while KnB took 5(!!!) episodes on a forty minute game and I was riveted.) I'll probably come back to it when I have more time though. I also watched All Out!! on FFA's recommendation,
but I'm shallowit didn't work for me.I have no idea what sports anime to tackle next. I hope to get some recs from SASO. Thanks for the intro posts! I'll have to go and ... put myself forward.

If you like series about adult characters, Giant Killing is really great, though doesn't have a large fandom. It's about j-league soccer, a club that's not doing well and brings in a new coach who is also a former player on the team. Lots of great relationship issues and tension.

Aw, I wonder if YOI is the small intersection in yours and my sports anime love. At least YOI exists though!
We should really make a list of hot anime sports coachs. I mean, Victor might be on top, though he's imho pretty terrible coach to Yuuri. But he sure is hot! I would nom the Touou coach from KnB although all he does is take advice from his players/club manager and play with his hair.
... But it's nice hair!

Ooh, hot anime sports coaches! Lilia was at the top of my list before Kataoka bumped her down a slot. And I do love Ukai from Haikyuu.

If it's any help, I really love Free! Enternal Summer, and only just like the first season. Sousuke, my fave, only showed up in ES and his rapport with Rin (and the fact that he was voiced by Hosoyan) made him and his entire story arc like catnip to me.
