That reminds me of a quote my mother had on a tote bag she got from a bookstore once that had a quote to the effect that the person bought books with their money first, and then with whatever was left they'd buy food and clothing. (I seem to remember the quote being attributed to Benjamin Franklin, but I could be wrong and I'm too tired to go searching for it.)
