Something to sing about, this land of ours

It's Canada Day and I'm celebrating by lazing around and listening to Stan Rogers. Properly, I should have dragged myself down to Tim's for a doughnut, but apparently my patriotism has some bounds. Besides, I just had one yesterday.

[livejournal.com profile] spike21 says that our "other national anthem" is the Centennial song. I couldn't find the lyrics online but it goes something like: "Ca-na-da, we love thee (one little, two little, three little Canadians)".

Me, I say it's Northwest Passage.

But what do you say? You don't have to be Canadian to play.

*clears throat* It goes a little bit something like this:

Canada's Really Big
by The Arrogant Worms

When I look around me, I can't believe what I see
It seems as if this country's lost its will to live!
The economy is lousy, we barely have an army!
But we can still stand proudly, 'cause Canada's really big!

We're the second largest country on this planet Earth!
And if Russia keeps on shrinking, then soon we'll be first!
(as long as we keep Québec)

The USA has tanks, and Switzerland has banks
They can keep their banks; they just don't amount
'Cause when you get down to it, you'll find out what the truth is:
It isn't what you do with it, it's the size that counts!

Those people will tell you that France is pretty large
But you can put fourteen Frances into this land of ours!
(it'd take a lot of work...it'd take a whole lotta work)

We're larger than Malaysia, almost as big as Asia,
We're bigger than Australia and it's a continent!
So big we seldom bother to go see one another -
Though we often go to other countries for vacation!

Our mountains are very pointy; Our prairies are not!
The rest is kinda bumpy, But man do we have a lot!
(we got a lot of land...we gotta whole lot of land!)

So stand up and be proud, and sing out very loud
We stand out from the crowd 'cause Canada's REALLY BIG!

I voted for "Ca-na-da" in your poll--because for a time in 1967 it practically *was* Canada's national anthem: it was played everywhere, kids sang it every morning in school, etc. But most Canadians who weren't born or in the country then don't really know it.

For a Canada Day song, I don't think you can beat Stompin' Tom's "It's Canada Day, Up Canada Way."

(And when it comes to Stan Rogers, btw, I'm a sucker for "Barrett's Privateers.")

We learned a lot of Canada songs one year, but I can barely remember them now. :(

For the past few years our family's had a singalong of Canadian tunes old and new on Canada Day. I found myself missing it so much this year, I posted one virtually (http://www.livejournal.com/users/netninny/24552.html#cutid1). *g*

Btw, I just saw bethbethbeth's poll answer and she's absolutely right. How could I have forgotten Hockey Night in Canada?

i'm saying 'the hockey song', but i'd probably vote for any song about hockey (usually sung by the tragically hip).
