This is pretty scattered. First impressions.

I found that I was reading this book like I was watching an episode of Buffy or TXF -- very invested, restless, yelling at the book like I yell at the screen (uh, only when I'm alone). I hope I can do a more book-like read next.

Harry -- and the book -- were wound so tightly! So was I. I think I won't actually be able to comment on the pacing until my next read through. But everyone was so unhappy throughout the whole book. It was very wearing. I couldn't relax.

It feels like post-high school Buffy to me -- everything is becoming all too frighteningly real. The pacing is different, the rhythm is different, the characters are more afraid and desperate.

My new unsupported-by-canon ship: Ginny/Tonks. Believe it.

And so nice to see Ginny get a personality here. I might not even mind if she ends up with Harry.

All the stuff with Sirius and Harry was so interesting. The Sirius/Harry that's gone before now seems to have some basis for me. It stands to reason that Sirius would be living in the past a bit, after all that time in Azkaban.

And Harry finding out that his father was a bit of a jerk back at school -- that was more than I dared hope for from JKR, so kudos to her.

Sirius. Oh.

Just waiting for the Firenze fic to start. But I loved Hermione when she said she'd never really liked horses.

And I now have a hankering for some Sirius/Petunia. Does such a thing exist? I'm not sure I have the energy to write it myself.

My favourite scene of all was when Fred and George left Hogwarts. That was the only real unadulterated triumph in the book. I heart them.

Hermione is deeply scary. What was she expecting to happen when she took Umbridge into the forest? She should be the leader. Although she might end up ruling the world. Efficiently.

And where was my Hermione/Ron? All that Harry/Cho all over the place and all Hermione and Ron get is some "unusual" perfume and a kiss on the cheek.

Draco is still Mr More-Annoying-Than-Evil Without A Cause. Whilst reading, I thought that there just wasn't much Harry/Draco play and that they were a lot more like Sharpe and Hakeswill than Mulder and Krycek. Until the end. My god. Only Draco is the one who gets to play "Hello, my name is Draco Malfoy, you sent my father to Azkaban, prepare to die." Can't wait to see the fic. Maybe I'll even write some of it myself.

Neville rules the universe. May he live a thousand years and have a lot of sex.

What I wish for next time: for the Dursleys to get involved in the middle of the story, not just the bookends. I really liked the development with both Petunia and Dudley here.

I'm having the Star Wars reaction here. Where there's so much new information to absorb and sort into the Canon In My Head that I still don't know if I enjoyed it or not. Though I think I did. I'll know more later in the week.

ETA: Snape and Harry? Oh. My. God. I'm not a shipper, but still!

And finally:

Weasley is our King!

It *was* like watching a mytharc episode of TXF, with a lot more "I saw that coming" as opposed to "WTF??"

I agree with you with the pacing and the feel of this book. I wanted to see Hermione/Ron. I mean, they're prefects they can do anything. :) Ron did do a lot of Krum Jealousy stuff though. And Hermione did say to Harry "you're worse than Ron" Re: Girls.

I'm disappointed that Harry/Draco isn't a lot more like Mulder/Krycek. Draco just doesn't have that depth and he's just annoying. Well, he wasn't so annoying in this book, he felt like he had grown up a bit. Though he should have caught the snitch. Which would have made Harry even angstier, I suppose.

Until the end. Yes, Draco's gonna go all Inigo Montoya, without being amusing. He's really angry. I hope that JKR runs with that in the next book instead of ignoring it.

As part of the canon, I liked the book, but as a lone book, I just didn't know where it was heading. There was no mystery to be solved!

I had the same reaction. The evil in this series was at first pretty reliably contained within the "magical atmosphere" aspect of the stories, while in this book it takes a big step into the "central character interactions" realm of the plot.

I have no Canon In My Head, but I feel the same way.

I don't think you Ron/Hermione fans are going to see much: for one, everything's from Harry's POV; and more importantly, Harry is an oblivious git (she says with all affection).

He's getting it, though -- the bit where Hermione yells at Ron and Harry is reminded of Molly Weasley is one clue.

Harry and Luna. Or maybe that's too obvious.

Fred and George Weasley are my kings.
