I think all the Oofuri and H2 and Slam Dunk and ES21 have made me forget the most important thing to keep in mind while reading new PoT chapters: Prince of Tennis is not really a sports series. Sure, it uses sports as the setting, but it doesn't follow the structure of a sports series, it doesn't have the same conventions, the same tone. It's more a battle series and when I remember that and take a deep breath, everything works so much better.

Sanada vs Tezuka. I'm happy. I know it would have been amazing to see Tezuka vs Yukimura, but there was no way that was going to happen. Ryoma has already beaten Sanada. And he's the Prince of Tennis. Who else would be the one to play Yukimura?

Okay, that reasoning is all external to the story. Internally, I wonder if Tezuka was originally S1 and due to Ryoma's non-appearance they had to change the line-up. Though it makes sense for them to start with the big guns, since this is the final.

And now, more line-up & win/loss predictions.

Tezuka vs Sanada. Tezuka will win. Ryoma has already beaten Sanada and so Sanada can't beat Tezuka, not before Ryoma beats Tezuka.

Inui-Kaidoh vs Yanagi-Kirihara, for symmetry. Maybe. I think Inui and Yanagi have got to come up against each other again but I just don't think it can be in singles, not because of them, but because of how everyone else has to fit in. Kaidoh has to play, but I doubt he'd get a singles slot in the finals. Since Momo is off with Atobe, I'm assuming he wasn't in the line-up at all, so that leaves Inui-Kaidoh. Unless Kaidoh got paired up with Fuji for doubles. Which would probably lead me to posting a whole page of pink hearts. Anyhow, assuming Inui-Kaidoh doubles, they will lose. They've already won two doubles matches in the tournament, so they're due. And I won't mind, so long as it's a good match.

Fuji vs Yagyuu. Maybe. But Fuji has already lost in the tournament and I think this singles slot will take a loss, because the Golden Pair has to win. Unless, and this was the thing that made me stop in my track and wave my hands at my partner when we were discussing this on our walk last night, we get Dream Pair doubles and OISHI PLAYS SINGLES 2. I doubt it's likely, but, oh, it would be so, so, so cool.

And, of course, Ryoma vs Yukimura. And Seigaku will win. Though it would be funny if Atobe's mission failed and Horio had to play.

It's the finals. I'm happy and I'm sad. I don't want these to be the last matches we see these characters play. (Though I assume we'll get a Tezuka - Ryoma match to cap the series.) I want Kaidoh to play singles AND doubles and I want him to play doubles with Inui AND Momo. I want more tennis, lots and lots of tennis.

I don't want it to be over.

All good things must come to an end...*sigh*...Just watch, he's going to throw Taka-san into the line-up, just to piss everyone off!! LOL He certainly doesn't get much love....

[identity profile] priestess123.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I would like to see him play too, but I agree, he needs to recooperate. Maybe the fastest way to heal a beaten man is with meat?? O_o Taka is tough, he don't need no hospital...lol

Oh my, how sad to see such a series come to an end...kind of like Slam Dunk...and then when ES21 finally ends, there will be tears.

But I'm rambling...here's to a Seigaku victory! HUZZAH!

*weeping* I want Sanada to win. I know he can't, I know this is a samurai series dressed up as tennis, but right now Sanada has taken top-favorite-spot away from Yuuta and I just can't help it. *weeps some more, and goes to clutch ES21 to her bosom*

*even though ES21 is reminding her that real sports series make it even harder to love the rival teams*

I am an Em filled with woe, I tell you.

I keep meaning to get around to Slam Dunk, really I do. I just keep getting distracted and fluttering off to do something else.

Has Oishi ever played singles in either of the tournaments? I only remember Kikumaru's match, but I've skipped a lot...

[identity profile] marksykins.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, Oishi's only played doubles in official tournaments! But that's where his strengths all are, so that's sensible.

[identity profile] mahoshi.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I wasn't sure. It would be interesting to see, but I guess the finals are not the time and place for experiments, ha ha.

If you want a translation of questionable value, I found one here:

It's more a battle series and when I remember that and take a deep breath, everything works so much better.
True that. =) And I'm happy with Sanada VS Tezuka. I'll admit it, I want Gen-chan to win, but either way is fine with me, really.

Though it would be funny if Atobe's mission failed and Horio had to play.
AHAHAHA YES. xDDD I'd love to see that. xDDD

[identity profile] karorumetallium.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you on both counts: I don't want this to be over, and you're right about PoT being a "battle series" thingy. A TezuRyo match... it'd be like a dream for all the fangirls, don't you think? We're waiting for it to happen, actually xDDD

... btw, could you tell me where can I download Eyeshield21 manga volumes? I'm dying to read that, seriously...

[identity profile] karorumetallium.livejournal.com 2007-06-04 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
YES, IT HAD BETTER HAPPEN OR ELSE. YOU KNOW.

Erm, no, it's not okay. Actually, MU is the one and only server that never works for my country, Venezuela. Any other would be fine, if you're willing to help ^_^.

[identity profile] pixxers.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
*weeps* I want Rikkai to win. :(

[identity profile] moshesque.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I'm tempted to ignore the fact that I've missed so much, just to see Tezuka and Sanada play each other. :) I would quite like Sanada to win that one.

[identity profile] happiestwhen.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to be daydreaming about Oishi-the-surprise-S2-player all morning now. :DDD

[identity profile] don-amoeba.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I want Kaidoh to play singles AND doubles and I want him to play doubles with Inui AND Momo.

I'm all with you there. :DDDDD

I want a part II on high-school tennis.

[identity profile] don-amoeba.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hal darling, you should just move to Japan and work in Konomi's creative team already. ♥

[identity profile] alice-and-lain.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
And I won't mind, so long as it's a good match.

That's the crux. I don't mind Inui and Kaidoh losing at all, even though I would obviously prefer if they win. They lost against Ohtori-Shishido and I really like that match. But if Konomi has them lose in a lame way or even win in a lame way (like with the Kawamura-Ishida match), I will be let down and sad.

Regarding the Inui-Yanagi symmetry, I wonder if Konomi sees it that way. I mean, I don't view them as being rivals, exactly; I also don't really think Yanagi would be overly invested in having to play Inui. Konomi might think that the one match was fine and that they don't need to face each other again.

Oishi playing singles 2 would be very, very awesome but why would Seigaku put forth a doubles pair that I don't think has ever played in an official match? Still, it's a neat thought.

I just hope all the matches are good.

[identity profile] grasshopper.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless Kaidoh got paired up with Fuji for doubles.

Oh, if only. sldkjg I don't even know what to do with such a heavenly thought. Maybe pet it a little. ♥

I know you've touched on the not-a-sports-series thing before, but I can't remember if you've talked about it at length, ever? If you have, I'd be interested in reading your thoughts. Especially since I've not really followed any battle type things. Well, except Bokurano but I am guessing that one is not exactly sitting neatly in any genre either?

(You know, this is why I keep wishing I could find writing on manga and anime that didn't always start out, "Anime is a Japanese art form in which cuteness is prized and people wear sailor suits!" :\\ I was trying to find something on manga aesthetics the other day and every single source seemed bent on making the medium monolithic, in order to set it in opposition to Western popular art forms, totally whitewashing over any possibility of differences between genres or even from one artist to the next. Er, not that this is a surprising treatment of a non-Western art. But it's still frustrating.)

[identity profile] karorumetallium.livejournal.com 2007-06-04 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't we waiting for Tezuka to do just that. And more. To go beyond. Oh god YES.

[identity profile] sarahofcroydon.livejournal.com 2007-06-02 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this really the final stage of the tournament? ;__:

[identity profile] histoirede.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
Singles 2 Oishi for the win !

(I don't want it to be over either ;___;)

[identity profile] postingwhore.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What is the difference between a sport series and a battle series?

Sanada vs Tezuka?! *dead*
