Has Sweet Valley High taught us nothing?

This brutal honesty meme? I can't imagine anything worse than having a bunch of anonymous people tell me what they really think of me. That's something I really don't want to know.

Frankly, I don't think I want to know what a bunch of non-anonymous people think of me either. Though please do mention it if I sat in gum.

I also thought that anonymous con-crit meme a few months ago was weird, though not in the same way. I think crit is most useful when you can put it into context. Like if a friend tells you that a movie sucks, you can put that in the context of what other movies she's enjoyed or disliked and how her taste aligns with yours and whether she's smart or dumb. But if a stranger says a movie sucks, you have no basis to evaluate his opinion.

In fandom, even if you don't know someone personally, you can see what they like to read and what they write (if they do) and all those other little things that help us form an opinion of someone (like maybe looking up what everybody said about them in the brutal honesty meme). But if they're anonymous, how do you know how seriously to take them?

In other news, I like cheese.

Well I think you are cool, talented, intelligent, and I like your icon. :D Do I get a sticker? (Oh, oh! I like your country too!)

You speak the truth, Prillalar. And you have good taste- because cheese is good.

(Myself, I do it because I'm bored and braindead after work ;)

I stopped SV after the Kids version. Though the TV show was pretty cracktacular.

Meh, for me, it's kinda a reality check; I have flaws aplenty, and sometimes don't see them.

I like cheese too!

I'm actually still waiting for the brutality part. (I think I'm jinxing myself.)

Like Lauren mentioned above, I'm pretty much using it as a reality check. I've been in a fabulous mood so I'm most open to criticism right now. :D

Also, cheese is good. Cheese craving. Now.

yepyep.. never thought much of the anon meme's meself. they are an ok way to pass the time, I can see that, but honestly? they sort of scare me.

I personally like pie. in some alternate realities people would say we are a good match.

You're a terrible person who...um...uses her friends. And. You suck at writing and being nice to people. Your icons make me want to kill myself and I think I hate you because you have friends. D:

So there!

I LIKE YOU AND THINK YOU'RE WAY COOL DESPITE THE FACT THAT YOU'RE NOT WRITING HP OMG!

*is anonymous*

D:

That's not what you said last night! BITCH. SEE IF I EVER INVITE YOU OVER FOR "FUN" AGAIN.

[identity profile] arallara.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I feel like I could have written this post. Right down to the liking cheese. *g*

Though please do mention it if I sat in gum.

Sure. Or a big piece of lettuce in my teeth, or an unattractive booger in my nose. Those are things I want to know, if it's tactfully pointed out by someone I know. You're totally right about the value of criticism in context, too.

See? This is my longer version of a "me too" comment.

The burtal honesty meme seems like a bad idea to me, too. If you've been around fandom for any decent length of time and you have any strong opinions or have produced anything the least bit controversial, there will certainly be at least a few people who will jump at the chance to say nasty, negative, cruel things about and/or to you without fear of retribution.

Has Sweet Valley High taught us nothing?

All it's taught me is I now want to write Prince of Tennis with SLAM BOOKS! *digs out her copy of Slam Book Fever*

I totally agree. Criticism (or praise) from a writer I admire is taken more seriously than the same from a writer whose works I dislike.

And I really dislike the term "brutal honesty." It seems to be tailor-made for tears.

Oh, no, is it that time of year again? I swear the Hive Vagina gets PMS right around the middle of June...

Sadly, cheese is banned from our house. *eyeroll* Loooong story. I'm sure you got at least half your f-list to grumble and make a bee-line to the kitchen though. :D
