My initial reaction when I read about this yesterday is that I would have taken them home and read the book, but kept it to myself. And then I would have spent 6 weeks wondering if they were fakes or the real thing.
However, after thinking about it some more I decided I probably would have turned them in. My husband works in the book industry and it would be very, very bad if there was a hidden camera in the field or some other chain of evidence that led to the discovery that we had the books. I don't know if I would have been able to resist looking at the books before turning them in. In any case, I would absolutely not have tried to sell the books and wouldn't have talked about it online if I read it.
I had a dream a few weeks ago about finding copies of Order of the Phoenix in a book shop, and I've just realized the dream followed this same pattern. At first I happily read the book but then I remembered that the books weren't supposed to be out yet and it turned into a typical anxiety dream.
I cornered my husband into a 15 minute discussion about this last night, so I could have written a longer answer, sadly enough.
Me? I would have taken them home, read from cover to cover, called up to turn them in, be forced to sign some sort of agreement that I wouldn't talk about them to anyone, then spend the next month writing brilliant fanfic based on all the new canon which I could then release just as soon as the book was in the stores.
45 days, give or take a few hours and not taking into consideration a midnight opening of the bookstore doors. =)
Wish we could also rely on League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0311429) as a distraction, but alas! it has no release date yet. The preview was almost exciting enough to make me forgive Sean Connery for 'Entrapment'. =)

Looked for the hidden camera. I'm paranoid that way.

And what would you have done?

That's what I would have done. :)

Book five? I'd have read it. Immediately. Right there in the middle of the field, if necessary.

Ah. It's going to be a good summer.

I saw previews for both League and Hollywood Homicide and was disturbed by how much better Sean Connery looked than Harrison Ford.
Also waiting for Pirates of the Caribbean and Charlie's Angels. A good summer, indeed.
