Playing WMV9 files on Mac OS X

Imagine my joy this morning when I tried to play the OVA and found that it was encoded with WMV9, which does not work on the Mac.

Some people report they can view it after they install Flip4Mac but I didn't have any luck, on either of my Macs.

I was able to play the file using the weird WMV3 Server method that's posted at the bottom of page 1 of this thread.

But it took so long to get to that point that I've only been able to watch the first 8 minutes so far. Le sigh, but at least it's working now. I hope that's helpful for someone else.

Is this for those wmv files that are encrypted, then? That need a password or something? Because, yeah, I can't get those to work on my Mac.

Sometimes wmv and avi files are encoded with the WMV9 codec (which is sometimes referred to as WMV3, just to be confusing). The codec is bascially the compression method used on the video to make the file smaller. Normally, if you have trouble playing a file, you just download the codec and you're fine. In this case, that codec is just not available for the Mac.

This is the first time I've actually seen a solution to the problem, so I'm glad for that.

I'll keep this in mind for files that are giving me problems! The only thing I've found that works consistently for avi files on an OS X Mac is MPlayer. Divine program, locatable on versiontracker.com.

that's exactly what i had to do with the Server thing, and I was ecstatic to find that that worked, because i've never turned up a solution before.

Marks and i were up until like 2 am, between waiting for the download and then waiting for me to find something. SO WORTH IT THOUGH. The golden pair are going to kill you, just wait.

I was having the same problem (and had just burn the OVA to see if my DVD/divX player can read it) when I saw your message.
