This match was love from beginning to end. A bit cracktastic, but still love. Have we ever seen two people so happy to be playing against each other?

There's a translation of the part where Ryoma is lying on the ground thinking to himself here. It's touching and funny.

And of course Ryoma has enough energy left after the match to leap over the net and bring Atobe the clippers. (Did Momo slip those to him?) Oh, the smile on his face.




We don't even see Atobe's face after that, just his lovely locks falling to the ground.

All I can think of now is Kawachi. Kawachi and his many terrible wigs. :)

I admit I'm a bit taken aback by the anger I've seen from some people over this. Not that people are disappointed that Atobe lost and was shorn, but that they are seriously angry and say they hate Konomi. You know, hair grows back. And if you weren't expecting Ryoma to win, then you haven't been reading the manga very closely up until now.

And now, we wait and wait and wait for more. Perhaps we should use this time constructively to write Atobe/Ryoma make-out fic. Clipped heads feel nice.

I bet Atobe-sama looks awesome shorn. And Hyoutei is all about the removal of hair, isn't it? Reminds me of the biblical story of Samson -- the power of the hair (although Shishido gained power after his shearing, hm).

I'm sure you're right. He will always look fabulous. I was going to say that maybe Atobe would feel that it was only right he shave his head after losing, since that's a penitent sort of thing to do. But then I decided he would never say that. :)

Sadly, fandom is an extremely irrational and unrealistic place sometimes. (I remain, however, boggled by people who complain when manga is formulaic. That's what it's supposed to be.)

Yes, this genre for sure. I think that's why I like sports manga so much.

Sports manga, especially, really SHOULD be formulaic. I enjoy the unpredictable stories to be found in real sports, but in manga I am happiest knowing exactly who is going to win and enjoying the unfolding of HOW.

I'm also baffled, however, by people who like shoujo manga -- or even shounen manga in which a romance is a major plot element -- but complain about the pairing(s) involving the protagonist, which are also almost always 100% predictable from very early in the series.

God. I think my favorite match of all time is Sanada/Ryoma in the anime but once this is all translated it might top it.

This match certainly had a different flavour than Sanada-Ryoma. That was a lot more grim -- this had so much verve.

Atobe should have known better than to make a bet with Ryoma. :)

I'm a little nervous that we didn't actually *see* him bald, just the hair falling. Until we do, there will be a part of me that doesn't quite believe it.

Exactly. Atobe is 14. His hair will return. Seigaku MOVES ON AT NATIONALS. What else could anyone possibly want? This match had such lovely payoff as long as you could look past the crack.

It's a bit weird that Ryoma and Seigaku have won everything so far. I would really have expected them to lose to Rikkai in the Kantou tournament, to follow the usual shonen sports paradigm. But the way everything is set up, there was no chance that they would lose here. The finals, maybe, but this early?
