PSAs, le weekend, and Slam Dunk

Prince of Tennis: Genius 191 raw. (YSI, zip) These are the good quality scans, as good as you're going to get from weekly Jump, anyhow. There are often LQ scans available a little earlier, but I don't bother putting them up here. I don't really have anything to say about the issue.

Meine Liebe: At last, a sub of the final episode - 13. (Haven't watched it yet.) Torrent file.

Harry Potter: There's a Snape/Harry, James/Snape doujinshi scanlation up at [livejournal.com profile] yaoi_daily. NOT WORK SAFE. You have to join the community to view and you have to be over 18 to join. The link is to the third of three posts; you can get to the first two from there. Harry is at school, so he's young, but this isn't shota. And if you're not used to reading doujinshi or manga, the panels go right to left. Not much of a story, but very pretty.

And there's a raw Dr Ten Hughes/Roy doujinshi being posted as well. It's so gorgeous.

I've just had 5 days off. I did read LJ during that time, but didn't really comment like I should have. I got work done on my projects, though less writing on my current WIP than I would have liked. I foolishly decided it needed to have seven sections and I've only got through one so far.

I re-read The Fifth Elephant and Night Watch because after Thud! I needed more Vimes. Never enough Vimes! Night Watch, especially, I love. Vimes and Vetinari. They're not friends but they could never do without the other.

I drank a lot of coffee, but no whisky at all for no very good reason. And I ate most of a box of expensive chocolate creams. Ah! The best part about the Boy doing Atkins is that I never have to share my treats. :)

All in all, a productive time. It would have been productive-er if I had thought to write watch 50 episodes of Slam Dunk on my to-do list. As it stands, I guess that was just slacking.

*

I've been watching Slam Dunk on and off for a while, but I just went crazy and watched, yes, 50 episodes over the last three days. (There are only about 17-18 minutes of new material per episode; it's not like watching 50 episodes of Buffy.) The games go on for fricking ever -- when it get down to the last ten minutes, you can count on an episode for each two minutes at least and sometimes for each one.

As you might guess, Slam Dunk is a basketball anime. (My second -- the first was Dear Boys.) Basketball and a little gang fighting (which I so enjoy). It's pretty hard-core shonen -- I could do with about 15% more character stuff -- but I'm really enjoying it anyhow. (Obviously, or I wouldn't be watching so much.)

I did read some of the manga earlier on, but the scans I had were pretty bad in terms of visual quality and it hurt too much to read them. (If anyone has good versions, please let me know.) It took me a while to warm to Sakuragi and Rukawa is not my favourite, but I do enjoy their dynamic. And I love everyone now. Yohei is my boyfriend. He's so the Kenickie to Sakuragi's Zuko. But he's more mature and you can tell he's always looking out for Sakuragi. Such a sweetie.

Since I haven't finished the canon yet -- I'm up to ep, hmm, 88 I think, and then there are the OVAs after that -- I haven't gone looking for fic, because I don't want to be spoiled. So I don't know what the main slash pairs are, except for the obvious Sakuragi/Rukawa. For me, they're what I think of as a Schrödinger's Ship -- I'm waiting for the event to occur that will collapse the waveform and then I'll either have shipped them from the beginning or never.

Kind of how it was with Sasuke and Naruto, actually, whose dynamic is very similar. You've got the annoying comic relief who is also the main character (Sakuragi, Naruto). He is a loser, but holds great potential inside. His greatest desires are to be acknowledged and to defeat his rival. You've got the rookie with amazing skills (Rukawa, Sasuke). He's a loner, he's taciturn, he's justifiably proud of his skills, and he looks down at the main character. Even though they are rivals, they are on the same team and must learn to work together. And you've got the girl (Haruko, Sakura). She is loved by the annoying one and loves the taciturn one, who does not return her affection.

Me, though, I'm shipping Kogure/Mitsui. I'm shipping them hard. To the point where there will be fic, even if nobody wants to read it. It's been a while since I had the thrill of going through new canon like this, looking for the little moments between my chosen pair. Any look, any word, any touch will do.

I also hope that Miyagi and Ayako will get together. How can she resist him?

I've just got through the qualifying tournament. That was pretty amazing. Seeing Akagi and Uozumi crying in each other's arms after the Ryonan game, I almost cried too. And in the Shoyo game, Kogure helping Mitsui off the court. And Anzai-sensei! He's a great coach.

I wouldn't necessarily tell you to run out and download this, unless you really like sports anime. Which I do. If you do too, give it a try.

And who do you ship, if you're a fan?

[livejournal.com profile] yasminm was writing a Kogure/Mitsui (I think) AU a while back.

I might ship a lot of people in Slam Dunk, but I am weak to P-Rythm's Sendo x Rukawa doujinshi, which I read even before watching the anime or reading the manga. Sakuragi x Rukawa is also a nice pairing, but I must agree with you in the Mitsui/Kogure interaction. That is one of the most obvious CANON pairings I ever saw, and remind me a lot to a certain pairing in Eyeshield21. Akagi x Kogure is also interesting, but Akagi is too much basketball obsessed. He's like everyone's big brother. Mitsui x Miyagi, Sakuragi x Miyagi are also interesting.
Another popular pairing is Sendo x Koshino.
Did you know that the annoying Hikoichi, from Ryonan had PoT Momo's voice? ^^

Mitsui/Kogure all the way for me! And Ayako/Ryota as well. I've never been big on Sakuragi/Rukawa (or Naruto/Sasuke for that matter), but it seems like a hugely popular pairing.

You probably already know this, but the manga goes on for quite a bit longer than the anime (the OAVs are completely different). Plus the manga is a lot better, if you ask me, in terms of the artwork and pacing. I would recommend at least reading the later chapters that aren't covered in the anime. Where did you get your manga scans from? I read the manga at the Tensai Manga Project website, which had pretty good quality scans, but those links are all dead now. I know boxtorrents.com has a torrent for the whole manga, but I don't know what the quality is like.

I have .zip files of the later chapters that I could send you, but they're on the computer at my parents' house. Let me know if you want them and I'll send them when I'm visiting my parents next weekend. Slam Dunk is one of my all-time favourite manga so I'm always happy to share. :)

I love getting new fandoms too! It's like getting drunk--you have a blast and feel like anything is possible and you abandon everything else you were doing, then you wake up the next day going "what the hell, where am I and what is all this fanfiction doing here?" Not that I actually like getting drunk, but that's what all the cool kids keep telling me happens to them.

When you're done reading the manga and can't be spoiled anymore, throw up a post and I'll rec you some fics. :)

I ship... Akagi x Kogure. Then Mitsui x Kogure. I don't really care about the other pairings... or maybe in the later teams you don't know *I don't remember the manga that much*

[identity profile] histoirede.livejournal.com 2005-11-14 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, true ^^;;; (except the fuku-buchô has the glasses and the buchô the terrible hair-style in the case of Akagi x Kogure)
As for Eyeshield 21... there's no captains/vice-captains on the team, so difficult to say... But the pairing I like most on ES21 is much more Otori/Shishido like, I'd say ^^

Anyone X Sakuragi. Youhei, Sendoh and Rukawa being the clear favorites.

The manga is(was?) actually being commercially translated by Viz, I think. The art starts out shaky, but gets *gorgeous* later on. (You think the guys look hot in PoT?) Takehiko Inoue is one of the best manga artists I've seen. I also feel like I see his influence all over current sports manga like PoT.

I don't know if much has changed in the past 2 years, but at that time there was not much good SD fic. Adorable fic, yes. Fic where Sakuragi turns into a girl, or Rukawa turns into a baby, or Mitsui is a vampire, or the teams are really dog-sled racers in Alaska... and of course most of the authors were writing in English only because it was the 2nd language they all shared. (It was an intensely adorable fandom.)

You might have better luck looking for dj. I'll admit to my shallowness: I got into SD at first because the art was awesome and then more seriously because... 5 years ago it seemed to have the bestest doujinshi. (There's no crack built into the anime, but the artists had no problem supplying it themselves.) There's *tons* of SD dj out there, and much of it was of really good quality, though it might be hard to find scanlations or even scans. Still, you can probably find scanlations of more big-name artists. Kodaka Kazuma has a MitKo dj or 2, and Ayano Yamane's RuHana djs...I adore them.

Kodaka Kazuma has a MitKo dj or 2

These are the words every fangirl longs to hear about her OTP.

... I hate her to never /really/ do my OTP T___T
*looks at her K² dôjinshi collection desperately*

When I 1st saw PoT Momo struck me as the love child of Hanamichi and Sendoh.

Now that I'm older/wiser(?), YouHana has much more to recommend it, but RuHana and SenHana just bring out some imprintings of teenage squee.

If all else fails and you feel a burning desire to see the MitKo dj by K2, I'm sure I can dig mine up and scan it in. I think Yoshinaga Fumi started out with MitKo dj as well. Given how nice her current pro stuff is, her MitKo dj are no doubt fairly good. (Really, SD used to be so big, it seems like everyone tried their hand at it.)

Sakuragi/Rukawa. Probably my first yaoi/shounen-ai pairing ever. lol.

And eh read the manga. The manga has loads more stuff towards the end. And I cried at the end, and I cried again when I read it for the second time... And I'm not usually such a big crybaby.

I got my manga off boxtorrents. The first few volumes aren't too good in quality (but still readable) but the quality does pick up towards the end (which really is the more important bit, really :P)

But of course the anime still rocks cos you can really see the action and because Mitsui has Tezuka's voice. ;)

It's been a long while since I first read this and I've been itching to reply, since I love SD muchly. I came here via [livejournal.com profile] kish_t_rethya's LJ, BTW.

I ship Fukuda (Ryounan) x Jin Soichiro (Kainan) mostly. It's odd but they are really, really cute. And Ryouta/Ayako is my all-time SD OTP coz Ryouta is just too adorable. HanaRu, like NaruSasu doens't have any appeal at all and IMO, no chemistry that way other. But there is a MomoKai appeal to their rivalry, if you see it that way.

And err, Maki belongs to Atobe so there XD XD

As for fics, these are the pple I know who write good SD stuff:
Shounen-ai/yaoi - all good writers
[livejournal.com profile] qithathu ([livejournal.com profile] yasminm's fic LJ - a lot of MitKo ^^ totally brilliant)
[livejournal.com profile] reality_is ([livejournal.com profile] orangensaft's fic LJ)
[livejournal.com profile] metafaust ([livejournal.com profile] rei_kurasaki's fic LJ - she likes SenRu but writes SD in general too)

Het
[livejournal.com profile] lady_shikamaru writes Rukawa/Ayako
[livejournal.com profile] butterpies (*cough cough* this is mine, pardon me) - I write Ryouta/Ayako but have been corrupted persuaded by [livejournal.com profile] rei_kurasaki to attempt a variety of other couples. Usually I write FukuJin or gen SD fic. Or lately *coughs even more* mad TeniPuri x Slam Dunk crossovers, which rei, yasmin and I co-authored. And crack pairings like Ryouta/Yasuda.

[livejournal.com profile] 31_days and [livejournal.com profile] 52_flavours are other places to find SD fic, esp the former. Just check the memories.

[identity profile] hemlocke.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I got into SD really late myself, so I was behind on the fandom and never witnessed it at its peak. The manga was over by the time I was introduced to it :< And what was available on the Net then was totally rank. Nothing you'd want to read so you're not missing much since it was bad BL fics written by fangirls with bad English and tons of Mary Sues in the bargain.

SD is overwhelmingly shounen too hence it doesn't have many fans because there's very few bishies there - Rukawa being the only one that comes close. Sendoh and Maki, though, IMO, typify classic masculine good looks. Esp Maki XD But that's part of the charm - it's realistic. Though I'll never argue against the idea of bishies strewn around the way they are in Tenipuri either ^^

The manga is long but worth it, as I'm sure you're discovering now. I know you're favouring MitKo currently but has anybody else struck your fancy? Just curious.

As for activity, there aren't too many currently - those abovementioned are definitely the active writers for SD currently. We'd certainly love to have more pple join in the fun so if you start writing for SD too, I'd be sure to pimp out your fics, since I remember seeing your name for non-anime fandoms. Must be either SW or LOTR. LOTR, I think.

And I forgot, [livejournal.com profile] rhoe and [livejournal.com profile] ayatsujik used to be fairly active in writing for SD too but they've dropped off recently. Their fic is in their memories.

And *joins [livejournal.com profile] yasminm in pimping out the fandom* I know you're busy with SD but have you ever read Sex Pistols? *grin* You'd love it. One of the main pairings there have similar MitKo issues ^^

[identity profile] hemlocke.livejournal.com 2005-11-22 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
*grin* Shohoku and Seigaku, being the main schools, is all about the Pride, Honour and male camaraderie XD XD That's why we love them so much, hee.

And I really, really like the Akagi-Sakuragi relationship. It's very sibling-like.
Ditto that. I love it the way he treats Sakuragi like his long-lost kid brother. He doesn't show it but he knows the perfect balance between discipline and encouragement for Sakuragi and it all helps to develop Sakuragi as a person. And there's this totally brilliant scene in the manga when for once, the tables are turned and Akagi needed Sakuragi to get out of a funk.

Actually, I really want to write some MitKo now now now,,
Oh, just do it XD XD I know you want to. No need to wait that long! *grin* And Sakuragi/Youhei - would love to see that.

As for SP - I'll see what I can do about getting it up for you. Maybe via YSI or something. *continues her pimpage*

Where do you get your manga from? I own the volumes but I do need the scans for iconage purposes myself and aherm, I don't want to damage my books. And *coughs* I made some SD icons if you're so interested - you can find them at [livejournal.com profile] dayroom, my icon dump journal. There's only two entries but both are SD-related, esp the first entry.
