So long, farewell.
This isn't about leaving fandom forever as an April Fool's prank. I'm just going on holiday for about a week and a half. It's possible we might have high speed internet where we're going and then I'll be around just like always and this will seem overly dramatic, but I don't know yet.
I find travelling stressful because I'm always afraid I'll miss my flights, forget my passport, etc. Last night I dreamed that I a) slept through a dentist appointment, b) left all my packing (and my taxes!) until ten minutes before we had to leave, and c) was at a con and nobody liked me. *g*
Whenever I go away, I take books. Okay, wherever I go on a day-to-day basis, I take a book. But when I go away, even if it's just for a day, I go overboard. I must think that I'll be doing nothing but reading all day, every day. And I don't seem to pack trashy novels, either. My brain says, oh, wouldn't this be a good time to re-read The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind and finally start on The Latin Sexual Vocabulary.
So I end up with a pile of interesting books that I can't read on the plane because I'm too jumpy to concentrate on them.
I actually did pack The Origins of Consciousness, but I took Cryptonomicon and From Hell as well, so there is some fiction in the mix. And I've been hauling around Collapse by Jared Diamond for the last two months. If you saw me at Escapade reading a huge hardcover, that was Collapse. I hope to finally finish it this trip.
I have been wanting to read The Latin Sexual Vocabulary for some time, but I do most of my reading on the bus or in restaurants at lunch. And the book looks like this:
Whose idea was it to use bright orange? I need to make a paper cover for the thing. And this is the book that when I ordered it from Amazon, they asked if I wanted to get Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis at the same time. If only my Latin were good enough to write smutty fanfic!
And that's enough babbling. After all, I have to get my taxes done in the next ten minutes. *wave*

Cryptonomicon! I read that when I went to Tokyo - 26 hours roundtrip on an airplane. I needed something huge.

Am amused by your fraughtness over the bright orange book cover of smut. I read my porn in public on the bus. Living in SF has its benefits.

It's not the content exactly, but I don't like to be conspicuous. When I was reading HP and the Goblet of Fire a few years back and took it out to lunch with me, I kept reminding myself to hide the cover or the server would come over and try to talk to me about it. And then I forgot and sure enough, she did.
(OK, now you can be amused by my lack of interest in engaging with people. *g*)
