Fandom is filling up my free time and I'm not always very good at managing that. I'm going to try to prioritize DW over Tumblr, since I'd rather engage with people here (she says after having not been around for two weeks) than scroll through art, however pretty, and inspirational quotes. But I feel like this always happens when I get writing; I keep my head down and then more time than I thought goes by and then all the posts I want to comment on are a week old. Sorry, friends. :(

I signed up for rareshipsonice and I'm excited to get started on that! I'm hoping to write some treats as well. Sooooo many good pairings. (Here's my Dear Creator letter.)

And SASO -- Sports Anime Shipping Olympics -- has begun! I'm on Team OtaYuri this year. Once the bonus prompt/fill rounds start, I hope to be writing a bit faster than I have been recently and in a lot more fandoms!

YOI Multishipper Problems

[ Before the ramble (or vent) begins, some signal boosting:

While working on some fic that doesn't involve any of these characters, I was listening to Steve Winwood (I'm an old) and Back In the High Life Again came on and I had a mini-breakdown over Chris/Victor, mainly from frustration that it's next to impossible to write them post-canon.

I love Yuuri/Victor but I'm a multishipper and Chris/Victor is my favourite Victor ship. (Nishigori/Yuuri is my other main ship, just to get even more impossible.) And I've never been in a fandom before where the juggernaut was so juggernaut-y and soulmate-y and canon-y that to write any other end-game pairing with either of them is nearly unthinkable.

I don't want to go canon-divergent; it's not my thing. Am I doomed to never being able to write what I want? Or is there perhaps some way to break Yuuri and Victor up post-canon that I wouldn't have to spend more than about 25% of the Chris/Victor fic dealing with? (Victor dealing with it, I mean, not showing the break-up.)

I realise I will have to sign a waiver indicating I understand no one will read this fic. And that I may also be consigned to perdition. It might be worth it.

Okay, whining over, thinking begun.

- I have finally finished the horrifying first draft of the last Chris/Georgi story! It's twice as long as I hoped it would be and it's probably going to take 6 - 10 hours of editing just to get it beta-worthy but it exists and that's enough for today. ♥

- Next on the list are two non-YOI exchange stories, one for Harumeku, a Prince of Tennis (my forever fandom) exchange, and the other for the Inter-High Exchange (IHX), sports manga/anime in general, which did include YOI but I decided not to offer it because I have enough of a list of my own to work through before SASO starts up again. My beta did tell me I was burnt out and should relax by writing some gratuitous porn, though, so some more YOI will probably sneak in there.

- I recently started playing in a new Pathfinder campaign and it's so great being back to it. Tabletop RPG is my secondary hobby, after fandom, and Pathfinder is my favourite system. (If you're not familiar, the base rules are essentially a fork of D&D 3.5.) My group is experienced and tactically smart but also really into the roleplaying aspect so it's usually the most fun night of the week!

- We're also back to playing more Marvel: Legendary, which is a co-operative deck-building game that's pretty much the most fun non-RPG table game I've ever played. (We had to sleeve all the cards, though, because sometimes when you draw Doctor Octopus and give his card a little kiss, you might get lipgloss on him.) I've actually changed my opinions on some of the characters based on their cards sets. I used to think Namor the Submariner was a pompous asshole but now I think he's a really hot pompous asshole. (Who should totally get back with Sue. Which would free up Reed for Victor.)

So catching up on DW this morning took me to skip 120! I've been writing so much I've just had to keep my head down. (Okay, yapping on Twitter as much as usual.)

I've been trying, trying so hard to knock down the draft of the final Chris/Georgi story and it's still not done because I keep having to stop and work on exchange stories. Also, even though I know what I have to write, I just can't seem to get to the end of it -- it's like when you have a big bowl of salad and no matter how much you eat the bowl never seems to get any emptier. But I have a day and a bit free before I have to start the next exchange story so maybe this time.

This will be the terrible first draft, mind you. Which is pretty much a bag of cold mashed potatoes that I will then have to bash and kick until it's moulded into a breathtaking marble statue. (Part of the process will be removing metaphors like that one.)

Because I find this story so difficult to write, my brain keeps trying to distract me with ideas for less taxing side stories, some of which are useful and good and on the list for later. But then there was this one:

Chris & Georgi Go To Monte Carlo

Chris: *slaps Georgi's ass* Dress up nice because you'll be on the arm of a high roller tonight.

Georgi: The Russian is the high roller, you Swiss geek. You're my arm candy tonight.

Chris: Well, I am prettier than you. But I'm the one who has a system!

Georgi: See? I got some temporary tattoos to look tough!

Chris: If Victor were here, he'd let me be the high roller.

Georgi: If Victor were here, you'd both be my arm candy.

Chris: Could you say that again but into my phone this time?

Working on some fic set closely in the GPF and the timeline seems a little unclear. As I understand it, unlike the events leading up to it, the final usually has a full day off for the men between the short and free programs. For example, the schedule from 2016 [PDF]. But is that necessarily always the case?

I'm in that stage with my WIP where it's not so much a WIP as a jumble of notes and despair. The problem with "just write X words per day" is that it doesn't really leave time for this part of the process: the ruminating and complaining and taking walks and creating the fucking outline, which, for character-driven stories, is so difficult for me.

Do you have a method for kick-starting that process? Just barf some words onto the page and see how that goes? Force a friend to listen to you ramble? Outline the emotional beats you need to hit and then fit the canon/made-up scenes around that? (That's not a bad idea, actually.) Procrastinate on social media?

In other news, I haven't been reading a lot of fic in YOI so far -- when I'm writing a lot in a fandom, especially when it's new, I tend not to read very much -- but I read almost everything in Choc Box (except some threesomes and a crossover) and it was great! So one of my goals is to do a bunch more reading, especially for rare pairs. But I may need to wait until this WIP is drafted to jump on that.

Another goal is to write something for YOI that's more plot-driven and light-hearted. YOI came along at a time when I was longing for a fandom with adult characters with sexual histories that I could write dirty porn about without having to age characters up first. (Not aging up for purity reasons; more wanting the characters to be sexually experienced.) And I have SO enjoyed that! But it's pretty far from my usual sports-series fare. (That said, the Idea Jar is far too full of stuff that makes me go, "Ooh, everyone is going to hate that but I'm going to write it anyhow.")

I was trying to get this posted for Chris's birthday on Feb 14 but did not finish in time, alas! I've been thinking about this premise for quite a while and finally got on to it. Also, as I said on Twitter, my YOI fic seems to be 95% guys messily banging in hotel rooms and it’s making want to get a hazmat suit for my next biz trip.

YOI and Word of God

A few things to keep in mind, about Yuri!!! on ICE and about any canon.

Word of God is not canon. What's on the screen or on the page is canon. Word of God is supplementary material that you are welcome to incorporate but you are not obliged to. We do not live in a universe where Greedo shot first!

Actions speak louder than words. People don't always say what they mean. They don't always know what they mean. When they try to explain their motivations after the fact, they may get them wrong or they may not be able to admit their true motivations. That applies whether you're taking a Doylist or Watsonion point of view.

Just because Kubo or Yuuri says, "hey, looking at these matching gold rings that canonically engaged couple JJ & Isabella are wearing makes me want to go buy a matching set of expensive gold wedding bands to wear on our wedding band fingers and exhange them with Victor on the steps of a church -- it will be just like that time my high school handicrafts club sewed matching bookmarks for everyone!" doesn't mean that was actually Yuuri's motivation, even if Yuuri tells himself it is. Or Kubo tells us it is.

People can't always articulate their feelings. One anime scene that strongly impressed me in years gone by was in Nana. Early on, Hachi and her boyfriend are away on a trip together. She asks him to tell her that he loves her. At first he says, "Don't ask a Japanese man to say that!" But he can tell she really wants to hear it, so he starts psyching himself up to it: I'm an American. My name is Michael. But he still can't say it and in the end, Hachi says it's okay, she heard him say it in her heart.

Obviously, not everyone will have that much trouble speaking about their feelings, but it's something to keep in mind.

Your interpretation is valid. I can interpret Yuuri and Victor's relationship in a lot of different ways and I really love that. You do you.

Personally, you will never convince me that Otabek is a DJ.

✔ Started making notes on the next Chris/Georgi instalment; should be the end of the narrative arc and I'm going to be both sad and relieved to be done. I've had the ending in mind for a while but now I have to work out how to get them there. Also, do more canon review. Chris at the GPF really kills me, I feel so sad for him. And when Victor says he's returning to skating, I can't help but feel deeply sad for Georgi as well. *kicks Victor in the shin*

✔ Started thinking maybe my potential exchange commitments for February and March are a bit much! But I really want to do all of them, so I don't know. "Moderation in all things" is a lesson I've never been able to internalize.

Just did my check-in for getyourwordsout: 16,039 words for the year to date, which is more than double what I need for my goal. (I'm trying to front-load my total to allow for slumps later on.) That's a lot of words for me, so I'm feeling pretty good!

One of my goals for writing this year is to be more wordy. That's a bit odd -- I think people are usually striving for the opposite -- but I generally have a fairly cut-down prose style that can be, well, inaccessible. A beta charitably told me it "requires close reading". I'm trying to "tell" a little more than I do now, at least most of the time.

I also feel like a lot of my work in the last six months has been fairly downbeat. Not sad, necessarily, but with a more sober mood. I'm trying to get back to a breezier mood and plottier stories for a while.

What are your current writing goals? Wordcount? Stylistic?
