YOI Multishipper Problems
[ Before the ramble (or vent) begins, some signal boosting:

rareshipsonice - Yuri!!! on ICE Rare Pair fanwork exchange! Basically anything other than Yuuri/Victor and Otabek/Yuri. Currently in nominations.

While working on some fic that doesn't involve any of these characters, I was listening to Steve Winwood (I'm an old) and Back In the High Life Again came on and I had a mini-breakdown over Chris/Victor, mainly from frustration that it's next to impossible to write them post-canon.
I love Yuuri/Victor but I'm a multishipper and Chris/Victor is my favourite Victor ship. (Nishigori/Yuuri is my other main ship, just to get even more impossible.) And I've never been in a fandom before where the juggernaut was so juggernaut-y and soulmate-y and canon-y that to write any other end-game pairing with either of them is nearly unthinkable.
I don't want to go canon-divergent; it's not my thing. Am I doomed to never being able to write what I want? Or is there perhaps some way to break Yuuri and Victor up post-canon that I wouldn't have to spend more than about 25% of the Chris/Victor fic dealing with? (Victor dealing with it, I mean, not showing the break-up.)
I realise I will have to sign a waiver indicating I understand no one will read this fic. And that I may also be consigned to perdition. It might be worth it.
Okay, whining over, thinking begun.

Victor sat and sipped his Double Double. The creamy sweetness of the coffee and the buzz of the caffiene melted into him as he stared at the paper cup, the plastic lid he'd pried off lying beside it on the table. He had to find some way to start his life over again, if that were even possible.
"Excuse me."
Victor looked up into the handsome face of the counter worker. The man was smiling down at him, a roguish look in his sea green eyes. "Did I forget to pay?" These days, Victor couldn't always be sure he remembered to take care of mundane tasks. He was reaching for his wallet when the man -- Chris his name tag read -- placed a strong hand on his wrist.
"These are on the house." He set a small paper box down in front of Victor. "You looked like you could use something to cheer you up."
"Thank you." Victor felt his eyes fill with tears at this simple kindness. He blinked but they overflowed and ran down his cheeks. "Sorry, I'm so stupid." He grabbed a napkin and scrubbed at his face.
"Hey, hey." Chris sat down across from Victor and took his hand between both of his own. "Is everything okay? Is there something I can do?"
"You're very kind," Victor said. He took a deep breath and stopped the tears, at least for the moment. "But I don't want to bother you."
"It's no bother." Chris smiled, a sweet, friendly smile. "I have to get back to work now but if you want someone to talk to, you can get in touch with me." He took a pen out of his uniform pocket -- Victor thought they were very ugly uniforms but somehow Chris made his look quite attractive -- and spread Victor's hand out, palm up. "Here's my number." He wrote the digits onto Victor's skin, underlining them with a brush of his finger. "You can call or text. Or LINE or Telegram. And here's my email. And Twitter. Instagram is the same as Twitter, but with a 2 on the end. And on Grindr--" He frowned for a moment. "Don't look on Grindr." He blew on Victor's hand to dry the ink. Then he got up and went back to the counter.
Victor opened the box. It was full of tiny baked balls of dough. He ate one slowly and wiped powdered sugar off his fingers. Maybe...maybe he'd give Chris a call later tonight.
