Summary:
I'm relieved and happy and sad to be done with the arc of this series. It started life as a single PWP. After Episode 6, I loved Georgi so much I wanted to write something about him but wasn't sure with whom. One of my friends suggested Chris and since he seemed like the type to happily get with whomever, I ran with it. The past Chris/Victor seemed like a possibility from their interaction in the episode and I thought it would give Chris some interesting motivation.
And then I had so much fun with it that I gave them a second round, so I could look at it from Georgi's point of view. And while I was working on that, the the canon provided us with that still of them both on the podium in Paris! So, that was definitely a sign for me to keep going. Then Georgi gazing at Michele in Moscow and Chris and Victor being sexy in the pool in Spain. So much to work with!
If I had planned this properly from the start, it would have been one long story with chapters and all instead of this escalation story by story in length and depth. But, honestly, if I had known the scope of the arc from the beginning, I might never have started. The last two instalments have been incredibly difficult for me; I'm not sure I would have chosen that. But it's been really rewarding and I'm so glad I stuck with it.
Sports manga/anime is my fannish home and there's definitely a sense of melancholy about it. There's always this spectre of the end, whether that's the third-years graduating after the Inter-High or Ippo taking so long recovering from his fight with Date that he's not sure he'll be able to get back into the ring or Chris and Georgi wondering if they'll be able to compete another season and not being sure what lies beyond that.
In the end, what I wanted for these two is for them to be ready to face that transition, together.
A few bits and pieces:
* I really wanted to call Glitter, the Paris instalment, Laisse tomber les filles (leave the girls alone) but I wondered if people would assume the story was in French. I still think it's a better title.
* My favourite image of the whole series is also from Glitter: Chris falling asleep while waiting for Georgi, then waking to see Georgi watching Chris's sex vid on Chris's phone. I think about that moment a lot.
* I love Georgi so much that it was difficult not to valourize him. I worked hard at it but I'm not sure I fully succeeded. I did manage not to mention the hockey skates in his storeroom, though. (What that cost me!)
* I'm not sure I exactly ship these two generally, but it does make me smile and smile whenever they're so much as next to each other in official or fan art.
And I'm already starting to think about the side stories on my list.
