The problem with Captain Tsubasa is that the old (anime) series is probably too told for you to properly enjoy it *now*, and the new versions aka remakes are ::insert puke here:: So I am not one to encourage you to watch it at all costs. I think the manga is a good start, though. You said you were getting English scanlations, right?
