I'm downloading tonight's Atlantis ep. But I have to confess I'm still four episodes behind from this summer. I mean, I have them, I just stopped in the middle of one and never picked it up again.

It's so weird about Atlantis -- I feel like the only one at the baby shower who doesn't want to hold the baby. I enjoyed the first season well enough. But the second really hasn't been working for me at all. It just bores the hell out of me. And if I can't get into the show, I can't get into the fanfic.

This isn't meant to diss the show, by the way. De gustibus and all. You should see some of the toku I'm watching. (Or, rather, you probably shouldn't.)

Of course I love Rodney. I've loved him since he showed up in SG-1. I was so excited to see him in the Atlantis pilot. And I really do like most of the characters. It's just the episodes that I don't like. (Voyager was like that for me too.) Maybe if Daddy Skinner Caldwell Daddy showed up a little more often... *g*

But I wish I loved this show like so many people do! I wish I wanted to read and write fic for it. Is there a support group for this?

Relatedly, I noticed that I have four Stargate icons. And they are all of characters who are no longer on the show. *sniff*

Ah well, BSG and Doctor Who soon! And maybe SG-1 will pick up a bit too. And maybe TV Nihon will sub the rest of Ultraman Nexus in one big burst and I will write fanfic that no one will read about Komon, poor Komon.

It's funny but you can't predict which shows will take you by the throat and make you want to immerse yourself in all the fannish aspects and which won't. I only started watching SGA because I knew MP was going to be in it and at first I was very blah about it, and then half way through the first season I realised I'd fallen completely in love with it. I agree that the 2nd season is proving a little disappointing so far. I have to admit that I never actually liked XF as a show very much - but I loved the characters and that's why I wrote the fanfic. I like SGA more as a show, and I'm in love with the characters too, so it feels very exciting to be into it, but unfortunately experiences with both The West Wing and XF make me constantly wary, and it's hard to completely throw myself into either the fandom or the show when I'm waiting for it all to go horribly wrong. So that's the downside of fandom - maybe it's good you're spared that at least!

And yay to both BSG and DW!!! Can't wait for them. Oh, and keep an eye out for Torchwood as well if you get that where you are - it's the new Captain Jack spinoff from DW and it's showing in the UK next summer.

I feel the same way about Atlantis. I like the show well enough to watch, but I just can't work up much excitement about it. It's odd, because I feel like I *should* love it. It's a spin off of a show I do love (or used to really, really love; SG-1 isn't quite the same anymore), it's got snark and banter and practically beats you over the head with subtext. Best of all, most of my friends are ga-ga over it and there's tons of fic by authors whose work I love and yet...nothing. I suspect if it weren't for the fact that it's slotted in between SG-1 and BSG I probably wouldn't watch it at all. Like you said: de gustibus. For whatever reason, SGA just doesn't quite float my boat. Good thing I've got the angst-a-palooza that is BSG to keep me distracted. ;-)

I started watching because friends fell in love with it and they started writing it fanfic. My impression of the show is that I'm definitely not there for the plot--there's nothing envelope-pushing about it--but I do love the characters. Rodney and John are too adorable to be missed. When I watch the show my interest is always, "And how did this episode further the character development?"

I hear you. I was like that with Smallville, I think. I actually didn't even really want to like the show, I just wanted to be able to play with my friends who were getting sucked in. Too bad Michael Rosenbaum wasn't enough to do the trick in that case. :)

I really didn't think SGA was going to take for me. I had friends try to pimp me with some episodes, and they sent me recs for stories, and it just held no interest. Until it did. *g* I have no idea how or why it clicked, but fandom is like that, huh?

Not only do I not want to hold the baby, I'm don't even want to go to the shower. Most of my best friends are there, and they're having a great time, but...I stand on my front step and wave a little white handkerchief as they go along. That's about it.

The problem I have is that I can't stand Rodney and never could. Which makes me unable to watch Atlantis and irritates me that I'm so irritated by a character that it destroys my enjoyment of something people I know like...

Yes, it really is hard to predict. I was very surprised when I didn't like Farscape too, since so many people I know do love it. And I'm watching all sorts of crazy stuff that I do love and can't quite figure out why.

I'll be looking out for Torchwood, never fear! If it doesn't air here, I'll download it.

The funny thing about SGA is I just don't really see the subtext, most of the time. I like the snark and banter, but it just seems like fluffy icing without some good cake underneath. I'm confused why that's not enough for me, since it is with some of the other things I watch.

BSG, on the other hand...that's a dense chocolate cake so dark it's almost not sweet at all. Mmm.

The characters are all -- or mostly -- very fun, I agree. I wonder if I'm getting too used to shows where there's more of a story arc and things change a lot from episode to episode. SGA does have an arc, but there isn't as much permanent character change along the way as I would have expected.

Smallville is a good comparison -- this feels very like that. I never really got into that either. I *loved* the adults on the show, but didn't like the kids. (I still get all shivery thinking about Lex/Martha.)

Hee! Maybe three months from now I'll fall head over heels too and have to delete this post so people can't look it up and find out my past doubts. *g*

That was me and Farscape. I wanted to like the show, but my intense loathing for John Crichton kind of got in the way. Sometimes it just happens like that.

Most of the English UM ficauthors I know make my brain melt, and I have not the patience to plod through long blocks of Japanese text (doubtless, very poetic text, but still.)

I think I'm going to re-watch once I've finished my Faiz re-watch. Komon is so sweet and sad that I always want to squeeze him.

I'm all revved up to be an Ultraman fan, but not enough to watch raws, so I've only seen Nexus, half of Max, and the recent Ultraman movie.

Komon alternately makes me want to cheer him on and punt him in the head. He's like a basset puppy.

Nexus is a good (if, granted, unusual) way to get started with UM, and Mebius will get you acquainted with some of the old Showa continuity right quick. I say welcome to the fandom, o revved up one. :D
