Serenity

I haven't read anyone else's post yet, but I've opened them all in tabs.

Wow. Good movie.

Scattered thoughts.

It's love.

When we saw River standing on that pile of bodies I for the first time realised how close the words "river" and "reaver" are.

Oh my god Wash. Oh my god. (But brilliantly done, Joss.) You could hear the whole theatre gasp.

"But my ship is dragging reavers!" That was an awesome, awesome space ... not battle, more like a space monster truck rally or something. But it was breathtaking.

Jayne's t-shirts get more beautiful all the time.

The sets were gorgeous. I wish there had been a bit more leisure on the ship to see them.

Zoe and Mal disagree. And Wash sees it. A nice moment.

I wonder how people seeing this without having seen the series will react to Mal. He seemed very unsympathetic for most of the film. Of course we were all, "God, Mal is really stressed out!" but I'm concerned he'll be too hard for people to connect to.

The opening caper was exhilerating. I do love a good caper.

Near the end, I thought for a while that they were all going to die. All dead. All gone. It's Joss, he might have done it.

There was so much tension. I'm exhausted.

When the Firefly theme played over the end credits, someone in front of us hoisted a lighter.

Wow, Book *and* Wash. Seems like a high body-count for one film. I wasn't surprised at Book's death, though. He was already separated from them. But will we ever find out his past now?

And why were they training up River and the others? And what about Blue Sun?

Nice movement with the Mal/Inara story. Just enough.

And I thought I would die at Kaylee's line about, what was it? "Been more'n a year since I had anything twixt my nethers didn't run on batteries!" I adore her.

"I swallowed a bug." River was the only one who wasn't injured by the end. She's very scary.

I'll probably think of a thousand things later.

God yes. I forgot that. When they were all lying in a pile bleeding I though "Fuck, he's gonna finish the lot of them off!" Phew.

"Swallowed a bug" Heh - 'twas a perfect line.

I thought they'd all die too...

I do think that line of Kaylee's was the best of the movie, and there were a lot of good lines.

Your reaction to darker, more bitter Mal was the one the Fox execs apparently feared we'd all have. Apparently this Mal is the one we were supposed to get on the TV show, but Joss and Tim and Nathan were forced to soften him up a little.

Personally, I didn't see a big difference in Mal, who has always read dark to me. Simon seemed a lot angrier and harder, though.

I didn't get to hear the Firefly theme! The film broke right at the end credits. ::whine::

Everyone I've talked to says they thought everyone was going to die in the Reaver battle. It's Wash's death that pushed us there, made us feel no one was safe. Joss knows what he's doing.

I forgot about the "I swallowed a bug" line! Tee hee!

At least!!

I think as far as Book's past goes, we're just going to have to make due with the Operative's story. *sigh* I doubt we'll ever find out what broke Book's belief in the Alliance.

I found Mal more, hmm, cranky than dark. Impatient. Snappish. Nasty.

Actually, you're right. That's a good distinction, and accurate. I found that his unpleasantness wasn't off-putting for me, because I was already thoroughly invested in the character. I do wonder if the Fox execs could have been (gasp!) right about it, though, when they had Joss, Tim, and Nathan niceify him a little on the show. Or maybe cranky!Mal would have just drawn a different, if not smaller, audience.

Oh, you're so right about Jayne. And he was so heroic in the movie! If Mal got nastier, Jayne got nicer. Not in a pasty way or anything. It was the first time I've found Jayne hot, I have to say.
