Michaëlle Jean, whom you may have seen hosting The Passionate Eye or Rough Cuts on CBC.

She's not a politician; the Governor-General is an appointed position. In the past, it has usually gone to retired politicians, but both Jean and the current GG, Adrienne Clarkson, were not. Actually, they were both broadcasters, among other things.

In any case, she is smart and creative and speaks something like five languages in addition to being drop-dead gorgeous. I'm pleased she'll be our Head of State.

Thanks for the information. P. and I plan to study up on how Canada actually works, since (like most Americans) we are shamefully ignorant about the way other countries function. We may pester you for the phone number of information about the Governor-General when we see you this week.
