PoT Fic: If The Buses Are On Time (Inui/Yanagi)

I've been working for over a year on my Grand Unified Theory of InuKai. First, I had to get the two of them worked out. Then I had to integrate Momoshiro, which I feel like I've finally been able to do. So next, it's Yanagi. This is my first stab at him. There will be more, as I try to figure him and Inui out.

The One Where Inui and Yanagi Share a Room at Junior Selection Enrichment Camp or

If The Buses Are On Time by Halrloprillalar
Prince of Tennis, Inui/Yanagi, R, 1300 words.
A difference in strategy.

Inui is still writing when Yanagi comes back to the room. There is a towel hanging over Yanagi's shoulder and his hair is wet. The bath closes in twenty minutes, but Inui needs more time to record his observations. He has too much data to easily recall and that is only from their group. If he could split himself into three, then he could--

"Sadaharu," Yanagi says. Yanagi doesn't need to scribble figures in a notebook; his brain will show him anything he's seen, crisp as a photograph, whenever he wants it. Inui has always envied this. "We should have won."

"Yes." They both know their mistakes, their miscalculations and errors. There is no need to discuss. Inui should feel badly over it, but instead he is just glad for a chance to play doubles together again. He adds points to a graph and draws a curve through them. If they had played three sets instead of one, there is a 73% chance they would have won.

Yanagi walks over to his bed. He stands beside it, his back to Inui, and dries his hair with the towel. "He's waiting for you," Yanagi says. "He looked up every time someone came in." Of course Yanagi sees this.

Of course Inui doesn't pretend otherwise. "We didn't arrange to meet," he says. He plans to wake early, see if he can find Kaidoh in the morning before the others are up and have a few quiet words. About the camp, about nothing.

"You're waiting." Yanagi turns and looks at Inui.

And it's true. Inui is still waiting for the right moment with Kaidoh, calculating and re-calculating his chances of success, trying to find the perfect time to speak up, to move beyond a few brief smiles and touches. There are so many factors to consider: if they are alone, if they are at school, if it is evening, if Kaidoh is hungry, if Inui is tired, if Kaidoh is silent, if the buses are on time, if the moon is gibbous.

"That's not a good strategy," Yanagi says. He comes over and stands in front of Inui, close enough that Inui can smell harsh soap and damp skin.

"What do you suggest?" Inui says. Yanagi's fingers close around Inui's wrist, so tightly it hurts.

"Don't wait." And Yanagi leans in and puts his mouth against Inui's.

Inui drops his notebook and pen. Blood rushes up under his skin, his joints lock in place. He's not just surprised, he's surprised to be surprised, shocked that he had no idea this would happen, not a glimmer, not an inkling.

And he's shocked that he's kissing Yanagi back, opening his mouth, closing his eyes.

Yanagi tilts them both and they topple onto Inui's bed. Inui pulls off his glasses and they kiss again, more, still. Inui has never thought about this before, not with Yanagi, never considered how it might feel.

It's hard to think about it now. Yanagi pushes his knee between Inui's thighs and Inui gets his hand up the back of Yanagi's shirt. They kiss until it's hard to breathe, suck in air, and kiss some more.

Yanagi rolls up so he's half on top of Inui. He's heavier than he looks and his body is almost cold, like there's metal just under his skin. Yanagi kisses as well as he does everything else and Inui wonders who taught him, how much he's practised.

The bed is narrow and Inui is sliding off. He pushes Yanagi over and they lie side by side in a tangle. Inui's shirt is riding up and Yanagi tugs it further, runs his hand up Inui's chest. Inui has his fingers on Yanagi's neck, his mouth on Yanagi's face.

Inui's brain can only manage half-thoughts now, and most of those are open wider, move closer, more. There's a vague feeling of unease but it's nearly drowned out by the clamour.

"Off," Yanagi says and Inui lifts his arms and lets his shirt go. Yanagi loses his as well and they roll together again, almost to the edge of the bed, Inui on top. Skin to skin, Yanagi still feels cool, or maybe Inui is just hot. Inui kisses Yanagi again, slides his tongue along Yanagi's lip. Yanagi touches Inui's back, his waist, then grabs his ass and pulls them closer still.

Inui's breath stutters, he lifts his head and opens his eyes. Yanagi's are open too and now they are looking at each other, centimeters away, hardly blinking. Their chests heave against each other, not quite in rhythm. Inui feels caught by Yanagi's stare, trapped like an insect pinned to a card, even if he struggles, he can't move away.

But Inui doesn't want to move away. He leans into Yanagi and they rock together, hard against each other, moving to find the best friction, the best angle for contact. This is several orders of magnitude better than doing for himself and Inui is almost dizzy from all the messages his nerve endings are sending to his brain.

Yanagi is breathing roughly, his open mouth half-pressed to Inui's face. Inui is hardly breathing at all. His back arches, he thrusts once more, and then he's coming, a throbbing noise in his ears and a sensation of falling.

When he catches his breath, Inui finds he's lying on the ground and someone is knocking at the door. His elbow hurts. He must have banged it on something. His pants are stained. Yanagi is sitting on the bed, looking down at him. The vague feeling of unease blossoms into guilt, into shame. This is not what Inui is supposed to be doing. Or rather, not who Inui is supposed to be doing this with. Only it was so good.

There's another knock. Yanagi shrugs and lies back on Inui's bed. Inui stands. He's shaky and he tightens his calf muscles to force blood up into his brain. He finds his glasses. The towel is lying on Yanagi's bed and Inui drapes it across himself. Then he answers the door.

It's Fuji. He has a printed schedule for them and he gives it to Inui with raised eyebrows and a hint of a smile. "The bath is closed now," he says and leaves. Inui wonders what he's guessed.

More than Inui has, maybe. How, how did Inui not anticipate this? What is he going to do? And what does he want to do?

He turns back to the room. Yanagi is watching him. "Renji," Inui says. They look at each other and Inui has that same feeling of being pinned down. Then Yanagi rolls over, his back to Inui.

"Good night," he says.

Inui stands there for a while. There is a toilet and sink just off their room and he tries to wash the stain out of his trackpants. He thinks he's got it all, but he won't know until it dries. He changes and gets into the other bed.

"Renji," he says again, into the darkness. There's no answer. A wave of nausea hits him and he draws his knees up to his chest. He wants to weigh his options, but his brain is a mess, everything is scrambled, he can't get as far as "if". All he can see are stabbing glimpses of one face, then the other. His fingers curl into the sheet. His elbow still hurts. He can't tell where his thoughts leave off and his dreams begin.

Inui sleeps late in the morning. When he wakes up, Yanagi isn't there. Inui goes to dress.

The stain is gone.

*meeps*

I enjoyed the story quite a bit. That said, argh, I just can't win, can I? First, despite the fact that I was enjoying your MomoKai fics (and I sure do like Somebody Else's Hand a whole lot), I kept thinking 'but what about Inui?', and now that I so badly want to see good Inui/Yanagi fic, here it is, but Inui's thinking about Kaidou. *shakes head, causing things to rattle around until they fall back into place*

(I deal with the fact that I've grown a giant soft spot for Inui/Yanagi by... well, mostly by roleplaying Yanagi in an RPG where there isn't anybody playing Kaidou and thus there is no conflict -- which is no unlike my initial reaction of nurturing a little baby AU in my head in which Yanagi had never moved away, because they were just so darned cute -- but in general by sort of separating them animeverse/mangaverse.)

Very nice ficlet ^-^
Nice to see a kinda "lost" Inui XD

First, I must say: I have no knowledge of this canon, none. I don't even know what media this canon is.

Second, and more important: I liked it a great deal anyway. I love the style of this, sharp and to-the-point in some places, dreamy and evocative in others.

So, you know, you're awesome. : D

...I have a big stupid grin on my face right now.

I've always loved Inui x Renji, and this scene fits into the senbatsu camp quite well.

Very nicely done, luv. :)

This is a dream come true... for a month now I've intended to explore/write Inui, Yanagi and Kaidoh at Senbatsu but you've done it for me, and so well!
I always thought it would confuse Inui a little bit... and I never considered that the initiation of something romantic between him and Yanagi(or anything, really) would occur at Senbatsu, either...
I really loved this. ^^

[identity profile] poilass.livejournal.com 2005-07-25 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, poor Inui! He often seems so knowledgable and in control that's it's almost a shock to see him as a hopelessly confused teenager. I think it's a terrible shock to him to be one. I love this line especially:

He's not just surprised, he's surprised to be surprised, shocked that he had no idea this would happen, not a glimmer, not an inkling.

For Inui it seems the worst thing must always be something he didn't see coming. But I also feel bad for Kaidoh, waiting and waiting. And I wonder what's going in in Yanagi's head -- I want to be angry at him, but there's obviously more going on with him than Inui (or us) can know about.

In short: fabulous.

[identity profile] neeteeus.livejournal.com 2005-07-25 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Inui losing control of himself is the sexiest thing ever. That being said, I hurt all over for him in this fic. Actually, I hurt for Kaidoh, who's sitting and waiting. That was such a nice image. "He's waiting for you," Yanagi says. "He looked up every time someone came in." I read that over four or five times. It rings so right.

Anyhow, I loved it. =D

[identity profile] danielleleigh.livejournal.com 2005-07-25 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
very nice and, of course sad and just...very Inui and Yanagi. And for me the title just about says it all (If the Buses are on Time -- something very wistful and fleeting in that.)

[identity profile] meretricula.livejournal.com 2005-07-25 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
ouch... it kicks me right in the OTP. Then again, it probably wouldn't hurt so much if it weren't so well-written! Will Inui ever get back to Kaidoh where he belongs?

also, nearly dying of love for your icon. I bet the spoon would bend if you dipped it in Inui Juice...

[identity profile] yumeyana.livejournal.com 2005-07-25 05:45 am (UTC)(link)

Awww... poor Inui.

I loved it. The way Renji seemed to be so compulsive yet as if he planned his moves the week before; the way Inui seemed to be there and not there both at the same time. It just fit, the situation they were in.

[identity profile] alice-and-lain.livejournal.com 2005-07-25 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh Inui. Oh Inui.

I absolutely adore InuKai but I am madly intrigued by the dynamic between Renji and Inui. Specifically, why did Renji leave him high and dry? I haven't read the manga but I think it says that Renji just moved? But that can't be all...

Really nicely done.

*laughs* Yanagi knows Inui too well, he knows exactly how to catch him off guard. Nicely done. I was half expecting Kaidou to be the one at the door, but I'm glad it wasn't him.

[identity profile] cellia.livejournal.com 2005-07-25 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so lame, because I was actually a little worried about the non-Kaidoh-ness of the pairing. I can't even pretend to not be hopelessly biased. But of course you are to be trusted and it really does all fit together wonderfully.

This part... you just made me love Inui a little more here. How he's this analytical type, but he can't use that to process any of this. And Yanagi is not answering and it's awkward and uncomfortable and he has to take care of the mundane fact of his dirtied shorts...

And Fuji. hee.

Also liked how you tied Inui and Kaidoh together with the waiting. Kaidoh through whatever mixture of shyness, propriety, ignorance is going on in his head, and Inui through his over-cautious over-analysis.

Yanagi felt very mysterious to me. There were things that hinted at him regretting a missed opportunity ("don't wait") but it was ambiguous. Or hey, maybe it was just hormones. In a way, though, this strange out-of-the-blue-ness makes it more realistic. And keeping him as more of a cipher makes this story more about Inui or InuKai. Though... I do wish there was something a little more of Yanagi. The lack of info about him here seems to imply (to me) that there is more to be told.

[identity profile] akatonbo.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
*laughs* I don't think I can quite make that leap either, more's the pity.

It really is a good story, and other people have left you much nicer comments, many of which I agree with. And one of these days maybe we will be on the same page at the same time again. *grins*

[identity profile] sarahofcroydon.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh heh, okay, I will... they were pestering me all through work, anyhow...
It's fairly similar though. Just judging from how he was acting during the doubles match (and lets hope this is accurately remembered and not made up!) sharing space with Renji would be quite confusing, especially in such an intense situation like an all-boys-sports camp and especially if Renji had never quite gotten over what... he was supposed to have gotten over. 0_o'
I've seen their Rikkai match three times now and I'm still not sure why Renji ran away. But I intend to make up a reason, that's for sure... XD

Your random bits of crack are the best thing ever.

Hooray for Senbatsu room-sharing. There should definitely be more fic about Senbatsu; while I was really displeased with a lot of that arc, the occasional moments of pure crack and fangirl-pandering made me terribly happy, and it was just made for people to write about.

[identity profile] dropsofgleam.livejournal.com 2005-07-28 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
My Inui/Yanagi fangirl side is gleefully giggling.

But even then, I feel kind-of sorry for Kaidoh. Even when I'm one of the few persons who have dificulties pairing him up with *anyone*, Inui included. :(

[identity profile] sarahofcroydon.livejournal.com 2005-07-28 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL!
Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand why more people haven't explored Senbatsu room sharing. Possibly because the rest of the Americans arc was just... well, crap but the infinite possibility of lots of boys on camp?
I'm making a website about it. >:3

For instance... where is Tezuka's room? Is he lumped in with all the other students? Or does he get an ensuite in the staff section with Hanamura and Sakaki? Who will look after him now that Ryuuzaki's gone?

Am I overly anal in wanting to know these things?!

[identity profile] sarahofcroydon.livejournal.com 2005-07-28 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
W00T!!! Awesome!! Love the crack. >:3

The two official ones were Momo & Ryoma, and ..uh, Sengoku and Kamio? I think?! So interschool matches are entirely possible, and I *think* they're according to group, too.

I've been planning to make a stick figure series of suffering!Kaidoh, (who clearly shares a room with Taka san so they can pray before bed, lol)
... anxious every night, straining to hear whatever it is that's going on next door... (even when Inui & Renji aren't even there, poor thing...)

*awaits fic with satisfied gleam in eyes*
Of course, that sounds freaky so we'll leave it as *awaits fic with happy expression.*

[identity profile] ee970.livejournal.com 2005-07-28 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Um, butting into your conversation (which oh my goodness, Senbatsu love is... er, love need crack please), the third (and last) canon senbatsu roommate pair was Kirihara and Kajimoto (as we see when Kajimoto goes to Momo/Echizen room looking for Kirihara in that ep where he's pushed down the stairs). Sounds like the odd couple to me, but...
/loser fangirl

[identity profile] ee970.livejournal.com 2005-07-28 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow. This is not a happy fic but it makes me happy... I am a Yanagi/Inui fan, and I love that part of it -- Inui being taken completely by surprised, totally disarmed, and Yanagi seems to know that that was what would happen. Perhaps he planned on it, I can't read him, but it doesn't seem that Inui can either. --But in addition to just 'zomg otp!11' there's the Kaidou factor, and you deal with it well (if not 'happily')... Inui is thinking about Kaidou, Renji knows this and acts anyway, knowing that it will only make trouble for the three of them... --Ack, the words I want to say are not coming to my fingertips, but yes, this is very well done. I think you are getting a good grip on Yanagi, and I look forward to seeing him enter your stable of fic subjects. :D
