Faaaaaaaaarscape

The first of many exciting Farscape updates as I attempt to become a fan!

So, I sat down to watch the pilot. La la la, there's that guy I know is on the show, now we just have to get him off in space for the story to start. Hmm, there's his boring friend, it won't be much longer now, I'm sure, and there's his dad and OH MY GOD IT'S TROY! Fucking Captain Troy, stayed on Earth, had a kid and why did no one tell me this was a Galactica 1980 spin-off? So first we had Apollo and then his kid was Boxy aka Troy and now we've got Troy's kid John. Apollo the Third. I'm twitchy already.

OK, off in space now and there's the wormhole and Apollo III is pulled off into the Delta Quadrant. Yikes, Cylons everywhere! And now Darth Blackadder is after him for killing Darth Baldrick! But finally there are proper aliens. Cool ones. A kickass rope-headed lion guy and a meltingly hot blue woman and a sort of squashed sea monkey. Oh, and there's Starbuck only she's a Cylon but she's hella hot so who cares. They're all in this Vorlon ship and some sort of hologram is driving.

Whee!

OK, I've stuck with it for 14 episodes now and I think it should be fine from here on out. Some of the early episodes were painful, but it's getting a lot better. And I like most of the charcters a lot.

D'Argo of the unnecessary apostrophe is my favourite. He's very attractive and cranky. It only took about three episodes for me to realise that he and Aeryn are meant to be together.

Zhaan is so creepy and blue and hot and bald and she has The Voice. When are she and Aeryn going to get it on?

Rygel is clearly the most sensible person on board. I love him so.

Aeryn is, well, if you've seen the show, you know. She's Aeryn. I love it when she gets frustrated. And when she beats people up.

John Crichton aka Apollo III is just plain annoying, I have to say. They act like he's Arthur Dent but he acquits himself like he's Dylan Hunt. He should be made to have some flaws. And to stop tricking me into thinking he looks like Daniel Jackson sometimes.

Further updates as events warrant.

Oh, don't you worry about JC. He's gonna get a lot less shiny.

It took me a while to get into Farscape, but once I was in I was very happy to be there.

[identity profile] fanaddict.livejournal.com 2004-08-25 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! Farscape just got better and better, until the last season when there was too much acid involved and it went really loopy - which is kind of scary when you consider how crazy the show was throughout most of the seasons. I love it. I think it's fabulous. There are some eps where even after it's over you're not sure whether they were incredible or just insane. They took risks with their stories like you won't believe, and when it worked it was brilliant and when it didn't, well, they tried hard.

Enjoy the ride.

D'Argo and AERYN? Um, not in my book. However, he's really a big teddy bear, and she is the hottest thing in genre TV. I get why you like them.

And I like my heroes perfect but a little jerky. Crichton gets less shiny and more funky as the seasons go. He'll grow on ya.

(And I may get to meet Zhaan at a convention next year!)

[identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com 2004-08-25 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
John isn't quite Arthur Dent but his one gift is he's adaptable and crazier than most people they meet.

I suppose Pilot hasn't made an impression on you yet as they haven't gotten into his backstory much. He was certainly one of my favorites during the run, the snarky little git.

The second season is where it really took off -- it's like crack after the season opener...

[identity profile] vonniek.livejournal.com 2004-08-25 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
Heee! You crack me up, despite my woeful lack of knowledge in classic Sci-Fi TV.

Crichton improves quite a bit after the first season, mainly because they pile more and more crap on him as the series wears on and he suffers quite prettily.

Rygel is clearly the most sensible person on board. I love him so.

You are a woman after my heart. I adore the little slug. (There are a bunch of people who would like nothing better than to kick him into the airlock. Blasphemy, I tell you!)

John gets better. Just wait till he starts wearing leather all the time. *thud*

Have you seen Chiana yet?

Chiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaana.

Disturbingly sexy. A lot.

You ::kill:: me!

I am dead! ::fwoomp::

The squashed sea monkey line made me laugh so loud that P. came in to see what was wrong with me.

So far I think your impressions are dead-on. (:

And to stop tricking me into thinking he looks like Daniel Jackson sometimes.

There is an entire vid dedicated to this concept, made my [livejournal.com profile] sherroldish and [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords. Once you're all caught up, you'll want to watch it.

Came in by way of [livejournal.com profile] vonnielake.

And to stop tricking me into thinking he looks like Daniel Jackson sometimes.

Heee. When [livejournal.com profile] _maayan started watching Stargate, I thought that Daniel Jackson looked like a low-rent John Crichton. (Heresy? I still don't think MS is all that and a bag of cheetos.)

He should be made to have some flaws.

::takes cue from [livejournal.com profile] nestra, says nothing, but sniggers a lot::

I think you'll like the show: as it goes on, it gets more and more fucked up. Although there's a sad shortage of viable slash pairings.

Is the lack of a volume control dial a flaw?

If it makes you feel any better, he has a really bad haircut for most of season 2.

And to stop tricking me into thinking he looks like Daniel Jackson sometimes.

Aeryn must think Daniel looks like Chrichton, or vice versa:

"I'm not [...] or Arthur frelling Dent." -- John Crichton

Resisting temptation to use spoilery 'scape icons... well, after a fashion...

Judging from her clothes, I think the logical explanation is that this picture was taken sometimes around .

Whoot! You have so many good impressions.

But I would never call Aeryn "girlie" Certainly not without a very large pulse cannon.

You have so many exciting eps ahead of you. Welcome to the fandom, pull up a chair and stay awhile.

This is another of those where I liked the first season, some of the second, and almost none of the rest. I got really tired of bitchy teenagers, and to the point where Scorpius would send me into frenzies of gibbering boredom.

But I did like the first season.

And I love Aeryn. I want to be Aeryn in my next life.

[identity profile] ellensmithee.livejournal.com 2004-08-25 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
But I don't find him attractive now, so I don't think the leather will improve him.

I couldn't stand him at first and didn't find him attractive at all. Too much of an American sunny-boy. But after he started wearing the leather...

[identity profile] chinawolf.livejournal.com 2004-08-25 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Most amusing. I look forward to more Farscape posts. :D

Darth Blackadder... *dies*

I take full responsibility. ::smooch:: Can't wait to hear your reactions to the rest of the show.

[identity profile] tir.livejournal.com 2004-08-25 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Having gotten into the show not that long ago myself (and finished it today), I can assure you that it does continue to improve for quite some time. And yes, as referenced above, keep the Arthur Dent line in mind. One of my favorite things about Crichton is that he's clearly as big a pop culture junkie as most fans.

[identity profile] fourteenlines.livejournal.com 2004-08-25 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Darth Blackadder

*falls on the floor laughing*

And it is eery the way John Crichton and Daniel Jackson look alike. But only from certain angles.

(another person linked by [livejournal.com profile] vonnielake. The Farscape fandom tends to...glom.)

I had similar thoughts about Farscape when I 1st saw it. Thought John was cute, but he seemed to be too much the stock!hero good-old-boy, ugly American when it came to aliens.

It gets *much* better (though of course there are still the dud episodes and annoying shipmates) and John grew on me to become my favorite character--especially when he says things like "what would Capt Kirk do?' to himself. And he suffers attractively. Aeryn is fairly consistently kick-ass.

Many other good characters and bits, but I don't want to spoil.

I still remember the last few episodes as some of the most exciting/entertaining tv I've seen in awhile.

[identity profile] dejla.livejournal.com 2004-08-26 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems, unfortunately, to be my common experience. I fall for a show in its first season, and then in second season, they decide to change half of the elements I liked, and there goes my interest.

Let's see... LFN, Farscape, Wild Card, Missing, War of the Worlds... List goes on, and I can't remember all of them. Sigh. I'm obviously just weird, because what I like doesn't seem to do it for other people.
