PSA: Security update Mozilla/Firefox on WinXP/2000

A security flaw was discovered in Mozilla and Firefox on WinXP/2000. Fixed updates are already available. If you're using Thunderbird for mail, you should upgrade that too. This only affects Windows users.

A stupid question

I feel really dumb, but I can't figure out how the hell to work it! I don't get a software installation window -- I get asked to save the file, so I did, and when I tried to open it the computer can't figure out what to open it with. What am I doing wrong?

I'm on a Mac, so I haven't applied the update myself. As I understand it from this page, you install the patch with the browser open. Judging by the file-type, you probably need to make sure that "allow sites to install programs" (or something similar) is clicked on in the preferences. (I believe this only allows install from a couple of Mozilla servers, not just any old website). Then when you click on the "install patch" link, the file should automatically install.

These are just my assumptions -- if you're having difficulties, the support forum might have something more.

Thank you! That was exactly the problem. (I remember unchecking that when I first downloaded the program.)
