*grinning* Yeah, he's pretty hot in civvies isn't he? Especially for such a proper, upright boy. I think that was the ep where I really stopped believing this was supposed to be a shounen series. I mean, that outfit is just gratuitous fanservice (not that there's any other kind).
The dynamic of writer responsiveness to fan whim, in anime and manga both, is really enough to make a Westerner's eyes cross, because they'll throw these things in without in any way adjusting the characterization to suit/explain the moment. It's just there.
Well, that's exactly what 95% of the Japanese and western fans I know thought when they watched the ep. ^_^ The trend of "sexy Kaidoh" is also visible on merchandise. You should see what he's wearing on some pictures I bought here in Tokyo...
I always enjoy seeing any of them in casual clothes -- it's cool to see who wears what. That one ep when Inui was wearing a ball cap! Mmm.
And I've been thinking a lot lately about characterization and how to weight info from filler eps as opposed to the main match eps, since they're sometimes almost contradictory! In the end, I suppose it depends a lot on the mood of the fic what you emphasize and what you don't. And I reserve the right to ignore filler eps completely if necessary.
(I actually had a lot of trouble watching the Hanamura's School for Gifted Youngsters arc because even though it was a big important match, the whole *tone* was the same as a goofy filler ep. I couldn't bring myself to really care.)
And back to that vest, because I just can't get my *brain* to move *on*. Supposing we were trying to reconcile that with Kaidoh's character -- who would have bought something like that for him? Why would he wear it? Because the only purpose of a midriff-baring, manly-cleavage-exposing tight little number like that is to say, hey, look at my hot body and don't you wish you could just grab the zip and *pull*?
